Setting up for a festival

The doorway comes first. A toran or bandhanwar across the top of the frame, marigold or mogra garlands down either side. Fabric versions store and reuse, so the same set comes out every year. From $22 for ten 4FT marigold strings.

The floor. A 3FT rangoli mat at $55 in eleven designs, which is the reusable alternative to drawing rangoli in powder each morning and sweeping it up each night. Bandhani cotton parasols in sets of five to twenty-five for a larger event or a mandap.

The light. Diya and t-light holder sets from $39, in counts of four to twelve. Brass akhand diyas take oil and a cotton wick; the gold-finish t-light sets take standard tea lights. Layered diya stands hold 18 or 30 lights on one stand.

The centrepiece. Urli bowls, floated with flowers and diyas. Nesting sets of three from $70, single gold bowls from $42, brass and antique silver for something that stays out year round.

The pooja itself. Mandirs and chowkis, brass kuthu vilakku and samai oil lamps, kalash, thali sets and a Chappan 56 Bhog thali.

Frequently asked questions

Are the flowers real?
No. All garlands, torans and danglers are fabric, wool, gota patti and pearl, made to be stored and reused rather than replaced each festival.
Is a rangoli mat better than drawing rangoli?
Different rather than better. A mat lays out in seconds, comes out again every year, and does not track coloured powder through the house — which is what most households here want on a weeknight. How do I build a backdrop with garlands?

Can I reuse these next year?
That is the point of most of it. Store garlands loosely coiled rather than folded, keep metal dry, and everything here comes out again.
Which diyas take oil and which take tea lights?
Brass akhand diyas have a raised wick post and take oil. Anything described as a t-light holder takes a standard 1.5 inch tea light. Tea lights and candles are not included.
Is the gold-finish metal solid?
No. Most gold-finish pieces are iron under a polish, which is what keeps a set of ten under $50. Solid metal is in the brass and antique silver ranges.
How far ahead should I order for Diwali?
Several weeks. We pack and hand orders to the carrier every day, including weekends and holidays, but the bulk diya and garland sets sell through and restocking from India is slow.
Can any of this go outdoors?
Under a covered porch for a day, yes. Sustained sun and rain will fade fabric and loosen glued pearls, so bring it in.
