Five Banarasi brocade cushion covers at 16 x 16 inches, woven with an all-over floral in gold against five grounds. A silk blend rather than pure silk, which is why this is the least expensive of our four sets.

Product details

  • 16 x 16 inches (40 x 40 cm)
  • Five covers per set
  • Hidden zipper, plain solid back
  • Silk blend, jacquard-woven Banarasi floral
  • Hand wash cold, line dry in shade
  • Covers only - inserts not included
  • Handmade in India

What brocade is

Brocade is woven, not printed. The pattern is built into the cloth on the loom with a supplementary weft thread, which is why the motif has a slight raised texture you can feel with a thumb and why it does not fade or crack the way a print does. It is the same construction used for Banarasi saris.

Banarasi refers to Varanasi, where this style of gold-thread floral brocade has been woven for centuries and where the technique is still hand-loomed for saris. The motif here is the small all-over floral - the pattern that runs across the body of a Banarasi sari rather than the heavy border design.

Why this set

A silk blend, and we would rather say so than call it silk. The blend is what brings this set in below the others, and on a cushion cover it is not a compromise worth worrying about - the blend actually holds its shape better under weekly use than pure silk does. The gold floral covers the whole face rather than sitting in a panel, so these are the softest-looking of the four sets from a distance.

What is in the set

  • White and gold - the quietest of the five
  • Pink
  • Red
  • Magenta
  • Yellow and gold

Five distinct colours, all carrying the same gold floral. This is the set that works in a room that is not already warm-toned, because the white-and-gold cover gives the group somewhere to breathe.

Where they go

On a pale or grey sofa, where a gold floral lifts without shouting. Across a bed as a full row of five. At a wedding or engagement, where white-and-gold is usually the brief. In a formal living room that is used year-round rather than a festival setup.

The rest of the range

We make four sets of five at the same 16 inch size, so they mix: the multicolour diamond brocade set, the Bandhani set and the elephant motif set. Buying two sets and splitting them across a sofa and an armchair reads better than ten of one design in a row.

For the table below the sofa, the silk table runner is woven in the same brocade.

Gifting

Five covers in one box makes an easy Diwali or housewarming gift - it needs no sizing, no colour matching to the recipient's furniture, and it packs flat. Tell us at checkout if you are sending it directly and we will leave the invoice out.

Frequently asked questions

Is this pure silk?
No, a silk blend. The three other sets linked above are woven in pure silk brocade - the blend is why this set is a few dollars less, and on a cushion cover that gets weekly use it actually holds its shape a little better.
What does jacquard mean here?
The loom mechanism that lets a weaver produce a complex figured pattern - it is how the floral gets into the cloth rather than onto it. Practically, it means the pattern is permanent.
Will they fit a standard 16 inch insert?
Yes. They are cut to 16 x 16 inches (40 x 40 cm). If you want a full, plump look rather than a soft one, use an 18 inch insert in the 16 inch cover - that is the usual trick and it works well with brocade because the cloth has body.
Are cushion inserts included?
No. Covers only, five of them. Inserts are cheap and bulky to ship, and most people already have them or prefer their own fill.
What does the back look like?
A plain solid panel in a colour matched to the front, with a hidden zipper along one edge. The back is deliberately quiet so the covers can be flipped or mixed without competing.
How do I clean them?
Hand wash cold, separately, and line dry in shade. Do not machine wash and do not tumble dry - brocade has metallic thread running through it that abrades in a drum. For a light refresh, steam on the reverse rather than pressing the face.
Will all five look exactly like the photographs?
The designs will. Small differences in how the woven motif falls across each cover are normal and are a consequence of cutting patterned cloth by hand.
Will the colours fade?
Brocade holds colour well because the pattern is woven rather than surface-printed, but no dyed silk likes months of direct afternoon sun. On a sofa away from a south-facing window they will keep their colour for years.
What if something arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph it, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace it or make it right.
Can I return them?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer.
Can I order several sets?
Yes - sets are ordered in multiples for weddings and for hospitality. Email contact@urliutsav.com with your quantity and date and we will quote you.
