Diwali Diyas & T-Light Holders

A diya is the small lamp lit during pooja and at Diwali; a t-light holder is the modern version that takes a standard tea light instead of oil and a wick. Thirteen sets here, $39 to $95, mostly gold-finish metal, in counts from four to twelve.

Which one do you need

Flat gold discs, sets of 6 to 10 — $42 to $60. Four designs that look alike as thumbnails and are not. Lotus is the widest at 5 inches with splayed pointed petals. Dhanteras is the plain repeatable one, the set you buy when you want a line of identical lamps down a table. Kamal Utsav is the only deep holder at 1.75 inches, so the flame stays lit near an open window or door. Gold Pearl Jali is the restrained one, a pierced gold plate with a white pearl rim.

Lanterns rather than discs — $45 to $60. The Gold Jali set of four are tapered pierced lanterns 3.5 inches tall, so the light comes out sideways through the cutwork rather than straight up.

Real oil diyas — $39 to $40. The Brass Akhand set of twelve has a brass oil bowl with a raised centre wick post on a coloured petal base, so it takes oil and a cotton wick. The Colourful Metal set of twelve is the shallow spouted oil dish and has no wick post — a tea light will not fit it.

Handcrafted, not stamped — $60 to $75. The Lippan Mirror set of five has mirrors set into clay by hand rather than glued on, in six design themes; it is the one genuine craft piece in this collection. The Mirror Diya set of ten has each stone placed by hand, which is why it costs more than the plain jali set. Floral Stonework at $70 justifies its price on hand-painting hours.

Not metal at all — $45. Pearl Beaded holders are craft board and velvet with pearls. Use LED tea lights in these, not an open flame.

For the wall — $55. Gold Wall Hanging holders, a pair at 26 inches, the only wall-mounted piece here. LED only.

Frequently asked questions

How do I arrange diyas for Diwali?

What is the difference between a diya and a kuthu vilakku?

Are tea lights or candles included?
No. These are the holders. A standard 1.5 inch tea light fits the t-light designs.
Which take oil and a wick, and which take a tea light?
The Brass Akhand set has a raised wick post and takes oil. Everything described as a t-light holder takes a tea light. The Colourful Metal diya set takes oil only — a tea light will not sit in it.
Can I fill these with water?
No. Most are iron under a gold polish, and standing water will lift the finish.
Which are safe with a real flame?
The metal ones. The Pearl Beaded set is glued fabric and pearl, and the Gold Wall Hanging pair is mounted at height — use LED tea lights in both.
Is the gold solid metal?
No. These are iron and pressed metal under a gold polish, which is what puts a set of ten at $45 rather than several hundred. For solid metal, see the brass collection.
Are the pearls real?
No. They are decorative faux pearls set into the rim.
Will the gold scratch?
The polish marks if scrubbed or dragged. Wipe with a dry cloth and store with a layer of tissue between pieces.
