Why this one

The painting is done by hand on each piece, which is why no two are quite identical and why this set costs more than the metal ones. Look closely at the middle band - the leaves are brushed individually and the small stones are placed one at a time. This is the most decorative set in the collection, and the one that holds up when someone picks it up to look at it rather than seeing it across a room.

Which one do I need

Four of our sets are flat decorative discs with a tea light well in the middle. They photograph similarly and are not the same thing in the hand:

• Pearl jali, 4 in, set of 10 - all metal. A pierced gold plate with a single row of white pearls at the rim. The plainest and the lightest.
• Sunflower & paisley mirror, 4-4.5 in, set of 10 - metal with mirror inlay. White stones set in a radiating sunburst, or a curved mango paisley. The most jewelled.
• Pearl beaded velvet, 5 in, set of 6 - craft board and velvet in red or pink, white pearl outer ring, mirrored centre. Soft to the touch.
• Floral pearl stonework, 4 in, set of 10 - hand-painted pink and green florals between a pearl rim and a gold mirror centre. The most detailed painting of the four.

Where it works

A puja room, a mandir shelf, a coffee table, a wedding welcome table. Somewhere people get close enough to see the brushwork - the detail is wasted at a distance.

Gifting

This is the one to give when the gift is the point rather than the lighting. Ten pieces divides into five pairs, and each piece stands on its own as a small object.

Questions people ask

Should I use a real flame or an LED tea light?
Either works, but we lean towards LED on this one. The base is a craft board with fabric, pearls and glued trim, and an LED tea light removes any question of heat or wax reaching them. If you do use a real tea light, keep it in its metal cup.

How do I clean it?
Dust it with a dry soft brush or cloth. Do not wash it and do not use any spray cleaner - the fabric, pearls and stonework are glued, and moisture will loosen them.

Will they all look the same?
Close, but not identical. The florals are painted freehand, so petal placement varies slightly from piece to piece. That is the nature of the work rather than a fault.

Why is this more expensive than the other ten-piece sets?
Hand-painting and individually set stones on ten pieces is simply more hours than polishing ten pressed metal discs.

Do the stones come loose?
They are set with adhesive and hold well in normal use. Store them flat and out of heat rather than loose in a drawer.

Can I use these outdoors?
Indoors only - the painting and the glued stonework will not survive damp.

Where are these made?
India, by hand. Small differences between pieces in a set are normal and are how you can tell handwork from a machine-pressed import.
