A chowki, also called a bajot, is a low wooden platform used to raise deity idols, a kalash or a pooja mandir off the floor during ritual. It keeps the shrine at a comfortable height for aarti and marks the space as separate from the rest of the room. Six here, from a $126 painted 18-inch chowki to a $700 brass-clad wedding pedestal.

Which one do you need

For daily pooja or under a mandir — the 18 x 18 x 6.5 inch chowkis. Gold, Red and Kolam finishes at $126, and a gold-border version with a cover at $150. All four are the same footprint, so the choice is finish rather than size.

If you need somewhere to keep the items — the Pooja Bajot with Two Storage Drawers at $160. Same low profile, with drawers underneath for matchboxes, wicks, cotton, kumkum and the things that otherwise live in a carrier bag.

For a wedding, mandap or event — the 22-inch Antique Silver Swan Leg Mandala Chowki at $700. This is a different kind of object: a wooden core clad in brass, standing on six cast swan legs. Wood is the right core at this width, since a solid metal platform 22 inches across would be too heavy to lift into place.
