A chowki, also called a bajot, is the low platform an idol or an offering is raised onto so that nothing sacred sits directly on the floor. This one is 22 inches across and 9 inches high, with a mandala carved across the whole top and six swan-shaped legs carrying it — a wooden base clad in brass and finished to antique silver.

What is a chowki used for?
It raises a deity, a kalash or an offering off the floor during ritual. Bajot and chowki are the same object; which word you use depends mostly on where in India you are from.
Will it take an adult's weight?
It is used as a wedding stool for the bride or groom, so yes for seated use. We would not stand on it.
Is it solid metal?
No, and that is deliberate. The core is wood, clad in brass and finished in antique silver. A solid metal platform 22 inches across would be close to unliftable and several times the price.
How many legs does it have?
Six, each carved as a swan, arranged around the underside. Six rather than four is what keeps a 22-inch top from flexing.
Does it arrive assembled?
Yes. There is nothing to put together.
Is this German silver?
No. German silver — also sold as nickel silver — is a copper, nickel and zinc alloy containing no silver at all. This is a wooden base clad in brass and oxidised to an antique silver finish. Worth knowing, because much of this category is sold as German silver regardless of what is underneath.
Can it go outdoors?
For an event under cover, yes. Not in weather — there is wood inside it.
How do I clean it?
Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Do not put it in the dishwasher and do not use abrasive scourers or acidic cleaners — they will cut through the plating. Between uses, store it in a sealed plastic bag; that slows tarnishing more than anything else you can do.
Will it tarnish?
The finish darkens slowly and is meant to. The mandala carving gains definition as the recesses deepen. A dry cloth over the raised areas brightens it again.
