Why this one
Almost every diya you can buy is metal, and metal on a table is cold and bright. These are craft board wrapped in velvet with the pearls set into the edge by hand, so they sit quietly against a cloth rather than clattering on it. The mirrored centre does the reflecting that the metal would otherwise do. Buy these when the table already has enough gold on it.
Which one do I need
Four of our sets are flat decorative discs with a tea light well in the middle. They photograph similarly and are not the same thing in the hand:
- Pearl jali, 4 in, set of 10 - all metal. A pierced gold plate with a single row of white pearls at the rim. The plainest and the lightest.
- Sunflower & paisley mirror, 4-4.5 in, set of 10 - metal with mirror inlay. White stones set in a radiating sunburst, or a curved mango paisley. The most jewelled.
- Pearl beaded velvet, 5 in, set of 6 - craft board and velvet in red or pink, white pearl outer ring, mirrored centre. Soft to the touch.
- Floral pearl stonework, 4 in, set of 10 - hand-painted pink and green florals between a pearl rim and a gold mirror centre. The most detailed painting of the four.
Where it works
On a tablecloth or a runner rather than bare wood, where the velvet has something to sit against. A puja aasan, a bedroom dresser, a mandap-side table at a wedding.

Questions people ask
Should I use a real flame or an LED tea light?
Either works, but we lean towards LED on this one. The base is a craft board with fabric, pearls and glued trim, and an LED tea light removes any question of heat or wax reaching them. If you do use a real tea light, keep it in its metal cup.
How do I clean it?
Dust it with a dry soft brush or cloth. Do not wash it and do not use any spray cleaner - the fabric, pearls and stonework are glued, and moisture will loosen them.
Are the pearls real?
No, they are pearl-finish beads set into the rim by hand. We would rather say so plainly.
Can I mix red and pink in one order?
Each set is six of the one colour. Order one of each if you want both - they look deliberate alternating around a rangoli.
Will the velvet fade?
In direct sun over months, yes, as any dyed fabric will. Keep them out of a south-facing window when they are not in use and they will hold their colour.
Can I use these outdoors?
We would not. Fabric, pearls and glued trim do not get on with dew or damp air. These are an indoor set.
Where are these made?
India, by hand. Small differences between pieces in a set are normal and are how you can tell handwork from a machine-pressed import.
