Five Lippan t-light holders, six inches across, made the way Lippan wall art is made - clay relief raised by hand off a board, with small mirrors pressed into it while it is still soft. Each one is a different pattern within the theme you choose.
Product details
- Set of 5 candle holders
- Six design themes to choose from
- 6 in diameter
- 600 g for the set of 5
- Material: craft board base with clay relief, inset mirrors and resin finish
- Handmade in India
Why this one
Lippan is a Kutch craft and it does not scale: the raised clay lines are drawn by hand, one piece at a time, and the mirrors are set into wet clay rather than glued on afterwards. That is why these have a depth the printed and pressed sets do not - run a finger across one and you can feel the pattern. At six inches they are also the largest pieces here after the lotus set, and they hold their own on a wall shelf when there is no candle in them.
Which one do I need
Six themes are available and each gives you five holders:
- Mandala - concentric radial patterns, the most traditional
- Purple - purple and white ground with diamond and lotus motifs
- Sun - navy and white starburst points
- Lotus - petal forms opening from the centre well
- Red Rose - red and gold jewel-petal work
- Mixed Colors - five different designs across the colour range, which is the one to pick if you want variety rather than a matched set
Where it works
A mandir shelf, a console, a low coffee table, a bookshelf edge. They also hang or lean against a wall as small art pieces when they are not being used as holders.
Gifting
A housewarming gift more than a Diwali consumable - Lippan reads as craft rather than decoration, and five pieces is enough to feel like a set without being a burden.
Questions people ask
Should I use a real flame or an LED tea light?
Either. The clay and resin around the well take heat fine, and the mirrors are set into the clay rather than glued. Keep the tea light in its metal cup and set the holder on a flat surface.
How do I clean it?
A dry soft brush over the relief and a dry cloth on the mirrors. No water - the base is a craft board and the clay is not fired.
Will all five be identical?
No, and that is the point. Within a theme each of the five is a different pattern, and the handwork varies piece to piece.
What is Lippan?
A mud and mirror relief craft from Kutch in Gujarat, traditionally applied to the interior walls of village homes. The mirrors were originally there to bounce lamplight around a room without windows - which is exactly what they are doing here.
Can I hang them on a wall?
They lean well on a shelf or plate stand. There is no fitted hanger on the back, so for wall mounting you would need a plate hanger or an adhesive disc.
Can I use these outdoors?
Indoors only. Unfired clay and damp do not mix.
Where are these made?
India, by hand. Small differences between pieces in a set are normal and are how you can tell handwork from a machine-pressed import.
Can I order a larger quantity for an event?
Yes. Sets like this go out for weddings, temple events and office Diwali parties fairly often. Message us with your date and rough numbers before you order five sets and we will tell you what we can hold.
