Why this one
Size is the argument here. At six inches these are half again as wide as the four-inch discs, which means ten of them cover a lot of table with very little effort. The layered construction also gives them height in a way a flat metal diya does not - there is a shallow step from the outer petals in to the centre, so they catch light on three levels instead of one.
Which one do I need
Four of our sets are flat decorative discs with a tea light well in the middle. They photograph similarly and are not the same thing in the hand:
- Pearl jali, 4 in, set of 10 - all metal. A pierced gold plate with a single row of white pearls at the rim. The plainest and the lightest.
- Sunflower & paisley mirror, 4-4.5 in, set of 10 - metal with mirror inlay. White stones set in a radiating sunburst, or a curved mango paisley. The most jewelled.
- Pearl beaded velvet, 5 in, set of 6 - craft board and velvet in red or pink, white pearl outer ring, mirrored centre. Soft to the touch.
- Floral pearl stonework, 4 in, set of 10 - hand-painted pink and green florals between a pearl rim and a gold mirror centre. The most detailed painting of the four.
Where it works
A long dining table, a wide console, the floor around a rangoli, a wedding or mehndi table. Because they are large, they work spaced well apart rather than clustered.

Questions people ask
Should I use a real flame or an LED tea light?
Either works, but we lean towards LED on this one. The base is a craft board with fabric, pearls and glued trim, and an LED tea light removes any question of heat or wax reaching them. If you do use a real tea light, keep it in its metal cup.
How do I clean it?
Dust it with a dry soft brush or cloth. Do not wash it and do not use any spray cleaner - the fabric, pearls and stonework are glued, and moisture will loosen them.
How is this different from the pearl beaded velvet set?
This one is bigger - six inches against five - built in layered rings rather than a single velvet face, and comes ten to a set rather than six.
Can I mix red and pink?
Each set is ten of the one colour. Two sets gives you twenty and they alternate well.
Are they flat enough to store?
Yes, they stack face to face. Put a sheet of paper between them so the pearl trim on one does not rub the gold on the next.
Can I use these outdoors?
Indoors only. Fabric and glued trim do not survive damp.
Where are these made?
India, by hand. Small differences between pieces in a set are normal and are how you can tell handwork from a machine-pressed import.
