Why this one

This is the traditional shape, the one that looks like a diya in a drawing. The spout is not decorative: it is where a cotton wick sits so the lit end hangs over the edge of the oil. If you actually light diyas with oil and wicks rather than tea lights, this is the set in this collection that is built for it. At twelve pieces and this price it is also the easiest set to hand out a few at a time without thinking about it.

Which one do I need

We sell two colourful twelve-piece sets and they are easy to confuse from a thumbnail:

  • Shallow spout diya, 3 in, 0.5 in tall - the classic oil-lamp outline with a pointed beak at one end, scalloped coloured rim, plain gold well. Sits almost flat.
  • Brass akhand diya on a petal base, 3 in, 1.75 in tall - a real brass oil bowl with a raised wick post in the centre, seated on a coloured metal lotus base with a small foot. This is the one for a continuous oil flame.

Where it works

Around a rangoli, along a window ledge, on a puja thali, down the edge of a step. Low enough to sit on the floor safely, which is where diyas usually end up on Diwali night.

Gifting

Twelve pieces arriving in gift boxes is the whole reason this set sells - you can give the boxes away as they come. It is also the cheapest way into the collection.

Questions people ask

Do I use oil and a wick, or a tea light?
Either. The spout is cut for a cotton wick with oil in the well. A standard 1.5 inch tea light will not fit this one - at three inches across and half an inch deep it is sized for oil.

How do I clean it?
Wipe out the cooled oil with a paper towel, then a soft dry cloth. This is iron under a gold polish, so keep it dry and do not put it in the dishwasher.

Can I float these in water?
No. These are iron under a gold polish, and standing water will work under the finish and cause rust. For floating diyas you want an urli bowl instead.

Can I choose the colours?
No. Every set is four red, four pink and four green. If you want twelve of one colour, message us before ordering and we will tell you what is possible.

Do they stack for storage?
Yes, they nest into each other. The whole set goes back into one small box between festivals.

How is this different from the brass akhand set?
That one is a brass oil bowl with a raised wick post, sitting on a coloured petal base, and it stands 1.75 inches tall. This one is a flat spouted dish half an inch tall. Different object, same collection.

Can I use them outdoors?
For an evening, yes - a covered porch or a still patio is fine. Bring them in overnight. Dew and sprinklers are what damage a gold polish, not the outdoors itself.

Where are these made?
India, by hand. Small differences between pieces in a set are normal and are how you can tell handwork from a machine-pressed import.

Can I order a larger quantity for an event?
Yes. Sets like this go out for weddings, temple events and office Diwali parties fairly often. Message us with your date and rough numbers before you order a set of twelve and we will tell you what we can hold.
