Why this one
The raised post in the middle is what makes this an akhand diya - it holds the wick upright and central so a flame can burn steadily for hours rather than sliding to one side and drowning. The bowl itself is brass, which is why it costs a little more than the flat coloured set, and the petal base lifts the whole thing off the surface so heat does not transfer down into a wooden table.
Which one do I need
We sell two colourful twelve-piece sets and they are easy to confuse from a thumbnail:
- Shallow spout diya, 3 in, 0.5 in tall - the classic oil-lamp outline with a pointed beak at one end, scalloped coloured rim, plain gold well. Sits almost flat.
- Brass akhand diya on a petal base, 3 in, 1.75 in tall - a real brass oil bowl with a raised wick post in the centre, seated on a coloured metal lotus base with a small foot. This is the one for a continuous oil flame.
Where it works
A puja room or mandir shelf, where a longer flame matters. Also good on a dining table precisely because the base lifts the bowl clear of the wood.
Gifting
Brass carries weight as a gift in a way that polished iron does not, and this is the only brass piece in the collection. Twelve boxed diyas covers most of a guest list.
Questions people ask
What do I burn in it?
Ghee or oil with a cotton wick around the centre post. A standard tea light will not sit in this bowl - the post is in the way, and that is deliberate.
How long does one filling burn?
That depends entirely on your oil and wick thickness, so we would rather not put a number on it. The point of the design is a steady upright flame, not a specific duration.
How do I clean the brass?
Wipe out the cooled oil with a paper towel, then a soft dry cloth. The brass will darken over time, which most people prefer. If you want it bright again, any household brass polish works on the bowl - keep it off the coloured base.
Is the coloured part brass too?
No. The bowl is brass; the lotus base under it is iron with a coloured polish. We would rather be exact about that than let the word brass cover the whole piece.
Can I choose the colours?
No, every set is four red, four pink and four blue.
Can I use them outdoors?
For an evening, yes - a covered porch or a still patio is fine. Bring them in overnight. Dew and sprinklers are what damage a gold polish, not the outdoors itself.
Where are these made?
India, by hand. Small differences between pieces in a set are normal and are how you can tell handwork from a machine-pressed import.
Can I order a larger quantity for an event?
Yes. Sets like this go out for weddings, temple events and office Diwali parties fairly often. Message us with your date and rough numbers before you order a set of twelve and we will tell you what we can hold.
