What brocade is

Brocade is woven, not printed. The pattern is built into the cloth on the loom with a supplementary weft thread, which is why the motif has a slight raised texture you can feel with a thumb and why it does not fade or crack the way a print does. It is the same construction used for Banarasi saris.

Why this set

These are the plainest of our four sets and the easiest to live with. The motif is a small repeating diamond rather than a large figurative design, so from across a room they read as texture and colour rather than as pattern. That makes them the set to buy if the cushions have to sit on a sofa year-round rather than come out for a week at Diwali.

What is in the set

  • Gold - diamond weave on a gold ground
  • Pink - the same weave in pink
  • Green - the same weave in green
  • Red - the same weave in red
  • Multicolour stripe - red, yellow, green and pink banded across the face

Four solids and one stripe. The stripe is the one that ties the other four together, which is why the set is built this way rather than as five separate colours.

Where they go

Across a three-seat sofa, where five is exactly the right number. Split two and three between a sofa and an armchair. On a bed as the front row over plain pillows. On floor cushions for a pooja or mehendi setup. They also work on outdoor seating for an evening, brought in after.

The rest of the range

We make four sets of five at the same 16 inch size, so they mix: the Bandhani set, the elephant motif set and the Banarasi floral set. Buying two sets and splitting them across a sofa and an armchair reads better than ten of one design in a row.

For the table below the sofa, the silk table runner is woven in the same brocade.

Gifting

Five covers in one box makes an easy Diwali or housewarming gift - it needs no sizing, no colour matching to the recipient's furniture, and it packs flat. Tell us at checkout if you are sending it directly and we will leave the invoice out.

Frequently asked questions

Is this embroidery or weaving?
Weaving. The diamond motif is loom-woven into the silk with a supplementary weft, not stitched onto the surface. Brocade and embroidery are different crafts and this is brocade - which is why the pattern cannot pull, snag or unpick.
Will they fit a standard 16 inch insert?
Yes. They are cut to 16 x 16 inches (40 x 40 cm). If you want a full, plump look rather than a soft one, use an 18 inch insert in the 16 inch cover - that is the usual trick and it works well with brocade because the cloth has body.
Are cushion inserts included?
No. Covers only, five of them. Inserts are cheap and bulky to ship, and most people already have them or prefer their own fill.
What does the back look like?
A plain solid panel in a colour matched to the front, with a hidden zipper along one edge. The back is deliberately quiet so the covers can be flipped or mixed without competing.
How do I clean them?
Hand wash cold, separately, and line dry in shade. Do not machine wash and do not tumble dry - brocade has metallic thread running through it that abrades in a drum. For a light refresh, steam on the reverse rather than pressing the face.
Will all five look exactly like the photographs?
The designs will. Small differences in how the woven motif falls across each cover are normal and are a consequence of cutting patterned cloth by hand.
Will the colours fade?
Brocade holds colour well because the pattern is woven rather than surface-printed, but no dyed silk likes months of direct afternoon sun. On a sofa away from a south-facing window they will keep their colour for years.
What if something arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph it, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace it or make it right.
Can I return them?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer.
Can I order several sets?
Yes - sets are ordered in multiples for weddings and for hospitality. Email contact@urliutsav.com with your quantity and date and we will quote you.
