The dressed-up version of the potli: two Bandhani drawstring pouches, ten inches square, with a multi-strand pearl and gold-bead strap instead of a plain cord, and a beaded mandala medallion worked into the front. These are made to be carried at a function rather than handed out at the door.

What Bandhani is

Bandhani, or bandhej, is the tie-dye of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The cloth is pinched into hundreds of tiny points, each tied off with thread, then dyed - the tied points resist and come out as dots. The word comes from bandhan, to tie. It is why the pattern here is speckled and slightly irregular rather than printed and even.

Why these

The strap is the difference. A plain potli has a cord you pull; this one has a looped handle strung with pearls and gold beads, long enough to hang from the wrist. On the front, a mandala medallion is beaded on by hand - not appliqued, not printed. Two bags to a set, 100 g for the pair, so they post as easily as a card.

What is in the set

  • Two bags, ten inches square each
  • Pearl and gold bead strap handle on each
  • Beaded mandala medallion on the front
  • Gold tassels at the base

The colourways shown across the photographs include pink, yellow, maroon and gold. Check the images on this listing for the pair currently supplied.

Where they work

Carried at a wedding, a mehndi or a sangeet - this is the bag that goes with the outfit rather than the one the outfit's jewellery arrives in. Also given as a bridesmaid gift, and used as a jewellery pouch for travel, where the pearl strap makes it easy to find in a bag.

Gifting

Bridesmaid and bridal party gifts, a mehndi favour for the close family rather than the whole guest list, a birthday, or a gift for someone who already has plenty of things and no more room for objects. If you need pouches in bulk for a whole function, the plain Bandhani set of ten is the one to order.

Care

Dry clean only. Bandhani is dyed rather than printed, so washing at home will bleed the colour. Keep the pearl strap out of perfume and hairspray.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags do I get?
Two. The price is for the pair.
How is this different from your set of ten?
These are larger at ten inches, they have a pearl and gold bead strap handle rather than a plain drawstring cord, and they carry a beaded mandala medallion on the front. The set of ten is the plain version, made for handing out in quantity.
Are the pearls real?
No. They are decorative faux pearls strung with gold-toned beads.
Is the strap long enough to carry on the shoulder?
It is a wrist-length looped handle, not a shoulder strap.
What will fit inside?
At ten inches square: a phone, a jewellery set, a lipstick and a card. It is a functional evening pouch, not a handbag.
What is Bandhani?
A tie-dye technique from Gujarat and Rajasthan in which the cloth is tied off in hundreds of tiny points before dyeing, so the tied spots stay undyed. The dots are the signature.
Will mine look exactly like the photographs?
Close, not identical. Bandhani is a hand process and the beadwork is applied by hand, so both vary between bags.
Can I order these in bulk?
Yes. Email contact@urliutsav.com with your quantity and your date and we will quote you and confirm timing before you order.
What if they arrive damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph the damage, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace them or make it right.
Can I return them?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer.
