What an aasan set is

An aasan is the cloth you sit on, or set the deity on, during a pooja - the mat that marks the space as the space. A set like this covers both jobs: a long runner for the shelf or chowki the idols stand on, and two square mats for whoever is sitting.

Why this one

The runner is 36 inches deep rather than 24, which is the reason to choose this set. A standard 24 inch runner leaves the back of a deep mandir shelf bare and the idols standing half on cloth and half on wood. Thirty-six inches covers a full chowki or a deep shelf properly. It is also Banarasi brocade - the gold-thread weaving from Varanasi - and at 1.4 kg the set is noticeably heavier in the hand than the standard one.

Three pieces in the design you choose. Yellow Elephant is the most traditional for a mandir; Pink Zigzag is the one that works outside a pooja context as a table runner.

Across a deep mandir shelf, a full-size chowki or a bajot, with room behind the idols rather than cloth running out at the back. On the floor as the base for a havan or a satyanarayan pooja setup. Under a kalash at a griha pravesh. As a dining runner on a wide table when the festival is over - 36 inches is generous for that and looks deliberate rather than makeshift.

The other set

We make two aasan sets. This one and the silk brocade set with a 54 x 24 runner. Both include two 24 inch square mats; the difference is the runner width and the cloth. Measure the shelf or chowki the runner has to cover before choosing - twelve inches of extra depth is the whole decision.
