Chappan bhog is the offering of fifty-six foods made to Krishna, and this is the thali it is laid out on: a 20-inch gold tray with fifty-six separate cups pressed into it, ringed by a floral border. One cup for each item, so the whole offering sits in front of the deity at once rather than being brought out in relays.

Product details

  • Diameter: 20 inches
  • Cups: 56, pressed in one piece
  • Weight: 1,750 g (approx. 3.9 lb)
  • Material: iron with a gold polish finish
  • Rim: pressed floral border
  • Handmade in India
  • Not dishwasher safe. Keep dry.

Why this one

  • Fifty-six cups, formed in one piece. Not a tray with bowls placed on it — the cups are pressed from the same sheet, so nothing tips or shifts when you carry it.
  • 20 inches across. Large enough to be the whole offering, and large enough to read as a centrepiece when it is not in use.
  • 1,750 g (approx. 3.9 lb). Substantial enough that it sits flat and does not flex when fifty-six cups are full.
  • Decorated rim. A pressed floral border runs right around the outside, so the tray still looks like something when it is empty.

What people put in it

  • The traditional chappan bhog for Janmashtami — sweets, dry fruit, makhan mishri, fruit
  • Dry fruit and mithai as a Diwali serving tray, a kind per cup
  • Haldi, kumkum, akshata and offerings for a puja
  • Lentils, grains and flower heads for a Navratri or Golu display
  • Tealights, one per cup, for a wedding or reception table

Where it works

  • A home mandir at Janmashtami, in front of the Laddu Gopal
  • A dining table at Diwali, filled with dry fruit and mithai
  • A Satyanarayan Puja or Annakut offering
  • A wedding or reception table, one cup per tealight
  • A Golu display during Navratri

Gifting

A specific piece for a specific purpose, which is exactly why it lands well with anyone who keeps a Krishna mandir at home. It suits Janmashtami above all, then Diwali, Annakut and a housewarming where the family is observant. Temples and community groups order these in quantity — get in touch before ordering if you need more than a couple and we will confirm stock against your date.

Frequently asked questions

When is Janmashtami in 2026?
Thursday 3 September 2026. If you want the thali in hand for the puja, order with enough time for delivery before that date rather than in the last few days.
Are there really fifty-six cups?
Yes, fifty-six, which is what chappan means. They are pressed into the tray rather than set into it.
How big is each cup?
Small — they are made for a spoonful of an offering each, not for portions. The point is the count, not the capacity.
Can I serve food from it?
Dry offerings, sweets and fruit are what it is used for. We would not put anything wet or oily straight onto the finish; use small cases or a liner if you are worried.
Can I fill it with water?
We would not. The base metal is iron under a gold polish, and standing water will eventually work under the finish and cause rust. Use it dry — petals, tealights, dry flowers — or float things in a separate glass or brass bowl set inside it. If it does get wet, dry it straight away.
Is the gold solid, or a finish?
A finish. These are iron with a gold polish over the top — not solid brass and not plating. That is what puts the price where it is. It will mark if you drag it across a hard surface or knock it, so lift rather than slide it and keep pieces apart in storage. If you want metal that cannot scratch off, our brass urlis are solid all the way through.
How do I store something this size?
Flat, on a shelf or under a bed. It is 20 inches across and about an inch and a half deep, so it slides into most gaps.
How do I clean it?
Wipe with a soft dry cloth. This is iron under a gold polish, so keep it dry — do not wash it, do not put it in the dishwasher, and do not leave it outdoors overnight. Wipe out any spilled wax or oil once it has cooled.
Can I order several for an event?
Yes — get in touch before you order if you need more than a few. We can usually help on price for larger quantities and confirm stock before you commit to a date.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every order is insured. Photograph the box and the piece and contact us, and we will sort out a replacement or a refund.
