What an aasan set is

An aasan is the cloth you sit on, or set the deity on, during a pooja - the mat that marks the space as the space. A set like this covers both jobs: a long runner for the shelf or chowki the idols stand on, and two square mats for whoever is sitting.

Why this one

Woven brocade rather than printed cotton, which matters on a mat that gets folded and refolded every festival - the pattern is in the cloth, so it will not crack along the crease. Each design is built as a patterned centre inside a contrasting lattice border, so the runner reads as framed rather than as a length of fabric. At 1 kg for three pieces it has enough weight to lie flat on a polished shelf without sliding.

Which design

  • Green Lattice - green centre with a red lattice border
  • Bandhani - maroon patterned centre with a yellow lattice border
  • Elephant Motif - maroon elephants with a red lattice border

All three come as the same three pieces at the same price. The elephant design is the most figurative; Green Lattice is the quietest against a white or pale mandir.

Where it goes

The runner along a mandir shelf, a chowki or a bajot, with the idols standing on it. The two square mats on the floor in front, for whoever is doing the pooja. Also used as an altar cloth at a satyanarayan pooja, under a kalash at a griha pravesh, as a meditation seat, and as a dining runner outside festival season - the runner is the right proportion for a six-seat table.

The other set

We make two aasan sets. This one and the Banarasi brocade set with a wider 54 x 36 runner. Both include two 24 inch square mats; the difference is the runner width and the cloth. Measure the shelf or chowki the runner has to cover before choosing - twelve inches of extra depth is the whole decision.

For a smaller base under a single diya or idol, the 9 inch Patola mats are the set to look at.

Gifting

An aasan set is the gift for a new home with a new mandir in it - griha pravesh, a wedding, or a first Diwali in a house. It needs no sizing and it gets used. Tell us at checkout if you are sending it directly and we will leave the invoice out.

Frequently asked questions

How many pieces do I get?
Three: one 54 x 24 inch runner and two 24 x 24 inch square mats, all in the design you select.
Which set should I buy - this one or the Banarasi?
The runner is the difference. This one is 24 inches deep, the Banarasi is 36. Measure your mandir shelf or chowki: if it is deeper than about 22 inches, go to the Banarasi set.
Can I sit on the square mats for a long pooja?
They are cloth mats rather than cushions, so on a hard floor for an hour you will want something underneath. For a short aarti they are fine as they are.
How do I clean it?
Spot clean with a barely damp cloth, or dry clean. Do not machine wash - silk brocade with metallic thread does not survive a drum, and a soaked mat dries misshapen.
Will it arrive creased?
Folded, so yes, lightly. Steam it from the reverse or press on low with a cloth between the iron and the brocade. Do not put a hot iron directly onto the metallic thread.
Can I put a diya or lamp directly on it?
Use a thali or a tray under anything with a flame or hot oil. It is silk brocade - it will scorch, and lamp oil does not come out.
Will it look exactly like the photograph?
The design will. Where the woven repeat falls across the runner and the mats varies a little from set to set, because the cloth is cut by hand.
What if it arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph it, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace it or make it right.
Can I return it?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer.
Can I order several sets?
Yes - these are ordered in multiples for temples, community poojas and event setups. Email contact@urliutsav.com with your quantity and date and we will quote you.
