An urli is a wide Indian bowl filled with water so that flower heads and floating diyas sit on the surface. This is the smallest of our five antique-silver urlis, and the only one whose sides are pierced right through — the floral lattice is cut out of the metal, not engraved into it, so a candle inside throws the pattern onto whatever it is standing on.

Product details

  • Diameter: 7.5 inches
  • Height: 4 inches
  • Weight: 600 g (approx. 1.3 lb)
  • Material: copper, nickel-plated and oxidised to an antique silver finish
  • Construction: pierced outer shell with a solid hammered inner bowl
  • Feet: four cast feet
  • Handmade in India
  • Sold as a single bowl

Why this one

  • It is cut, not carved. Every rosette in the lattice is pierced through the wall of the bowl. Hold it up to a window and you can see daylight through it.
  • It still holds water. There is a separate solid inner bowl seated inside the pierced shell, hammered smooth and etched with a lotus at the base. The lattice is the outside only.
  • 600 g (approx. 1.3 lb) for a 7.5-inch piece. It sits heavy for its size and does not slide on a polished table.
  • Deep, not flat. At 4 inches tall it is a pot rather than a dish, so it holds a real volume of water and the flowers sit down inside the rim rather than perching on it.
  • Copper underneath. The body is copper — the metal used for kalash and pooja vessels — nickel-plated and then oxidised, which is what gives the antique silver its depth in the recesses rather than a flat grey.

Which one do I need

Five antique-silver bowls, five different jobs. The others in the range:

Where it works

  • A console or hall table by the front door, with a tealight inside so the cutwork reads against the wall
  • A coffee table, filled with water and three floating candles
  • Beside a mandir as a petal or prasad bowl
  • A bathroom counter holding guest soaps or potpourri
  • A bookshelf, empty — the cutwork carries on its own

Gifting

The easiest of the five to give, because it is the one that fits on any surface and needs no explaining. It suits Diwali, Janmashtami, housewarming and griha pravesh, and it is a common choice for a wedding-guest gift where you want something Indian and lasting rather than consumable. It arrives in plain packaging with no price on it.

Frequently asked questions

The sides have holes in them — will it leak?
No. The pierced shell is decorative. A separate solid bowl sits inside it and holds the water.
Can I put a candle in it?
Yes, and it is the reason to buy this one over the others. A tealight or a small pillar inside throws the cutwork pattern outward. Floating candles on water work too.
Can I fill it with water?
Yes. Fill it, float flower heads or floating candles, and empty and dry it the same evening. Standing water left in a plated bowl for days will mark the finish.
How big is it really?
7.5 inches across and 4 inches tall — about the footprint of a dinner plate's centre, and taller than most people expect from the photographs. One of the images has the dimensions marked on it.
Is this the same as the 9-inch rose bowl?
No, and they are easy to confuse at these sizes. This one is deep and pierced. The 9-inch is shallow and wide with a scalloped rim and solid sides. They look quite different in a room.
Is this German silver?
Not literally, and we would rather say so plainly. German silver — also sold as nickel silver — is a copper, nickel and zinc alloy that contains no silver in it at all. This bowl is copper, nickel-plated and then oxidised so the darkening settles into the recesses of the pattern. A lot of this category gets sold as German silver regardless of what is actually underneath, so it is worth knowing which you are buying.
How do I clean it?
Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Do not put it in the dishwasher and do not use abrasive scourers or acidic cleaners — they will cut through the plating. Between uses, store it in a sealed plastic bag; that slows tarnishing more than anything else you can do.
Will it tarnish?
Silver plating darkens over time, and the antique finish is designed to sit in the recesses and deepen the pattern as it does. That is the intended look. If you want it brighter, a light buff with a dry cloth on the raised areas will lift it.
Is it food safe?
Treat it as decorative. It is fine for dry wrapped sweets or a mound of petals, but we would not serve loose food directly from a plated surface.
Can I order several for an event?
Yes — get in touch before you order if you need more than a few. We can usually help on price for larger quantities and confirm stock before you commit to a date.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every order is insured. Photograph the box and the piece and contact us, and we will sort out a replacement or a refund.
