An urli is an open, wide-mouthed Indian bowl meant to be filled with water, so that flower heads, petals and floating diyas rest on the surface. This one sits in the middle of our antique-silver range: 13.5 inches across and 3.5 inches tall, with elephants walking through flowering vines raised in relief around the outside wall, a patterned centre inside, and small feet that lift it off the table. It is sized for a coffee table or a pooja table rather than a whole dining room.

Why this one

1,340 g of copper — approx. 3.0 lb. Pick it up and it has weight in the hand, which a spun or pressed tin bowl of the same size does not.
The elephants are raised, not engraved. They stand proud of the surface, so they catch the light and you can feel each one under your fingers.
The elephants go all the way round. There is no plain back to turn to the wall. Seen from any seat, a procession of elephants among vines faces you.
Patterned inside as well as out. The centre of the bowl carries its own design, so with water in it you see the pattern through the flowers and petals.
The in-between size. Wide enough to hold a ring of floating diyas around a centre flower, low enough at 3.5 inches to talk across or see past on a coffee table.
Raised on feet. The base stays clear of the table, so it sits level and a wet ring is less likely to form under it.

Frequently asked questions

How big is 13.5 inches in practice?

About the width of a large dinner plate plus a hand's width, and 3.5 inches tall. On a standard coffee table it becomes the main object with room around it. For a six-seat dining table, the 17-inch bowl fills the centre better.

Do the flowers, diyas or tea-light come with it?

No. It is sold as a single bowl. The flowers, diyas and candles in our photographs are styling only.

Can I fill it with water?

Yes. Fill it, float flower heads or floating candles, and empty and dry it the same evening. Standing water left in a plated bowl for days will mark the finish.

Can I put lit diyas in it?

Floating diyas and floating candles on water, yes. Never leave a flame unattended, and keep it clear of curtains and anything hanging above.

Is the pattern engraved or raised?

Raised. The elephants and vines stand out from the wall of the bowl rather than being cut into it, which is why they show up so clearly in low light.

Is this German silver?

Not literally, and we would rather say so plainly. German silver — also sold as nickel silver — is a copper, nickel and zinc alloy that contains no silver in it at all. This bowl is copper, nickel-plated and then oxidised so the darkening settles into the recesses of the pattern. A lot of this category gets sold as German silver regardless of what is actually underneath, so it is worth knowing which you are buying.

How do I clean it?

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Do not put it in the dishwasher and do not use abrasive scourers or acidic cleaners — they will cut through the plating. Between uses, store it in a sealed plastic bag; that slows tarnishing more than anything else you can do.

Will it tarnish?

The plating darkens over time, and the antique finish is designed to sit in the recesses and deepen the pattern as it does. That is the intended look. If you want it brighter, a light buff with a dry cloth on the raised areas will lift it.

Can it go outside?

For an evening, under cover, yes. Do not leave it out in weather or overnight; damp and plating do not get on.
