An urli is a wide Indian bowl filled with water so that flower heads and floating diyas sit on the surface. This one is worked all the way round with animals: elephants, leaping deer, a spotted leopard and peacocks, each set into dense foliage and pushed out from behind so the figures stand proud of the metal. At 17 inches across it is a room's centrepiece rather than a table accent.

Product details

  • Diameter: 17 inches
  • Height: 6 inches
  • Weight: 2,556 g (approx. 5.6 lb)
  • Material: copper, nickel-plated and oxidised to an antique silver finish
  • Decoration: repoussé animal and foliage panels; beaded rim
  • Feet: four sculpted feet
  • Handmade in India
  • Sold as a single bowl

Why this one

  • 2,556 g of metal — approx. 5.6 lb. You feel it the moment you lift the box. Nothing thin or spun gets this kind of relief worked into it.
  • The animals are raised, not etched. Repoussé work, pushed out from the inside and chased from the front. Run a hand over the side and every elephant and deer is a ridge under your fingers.
  • No two panels repeat. Walk around it and the scene changes — deer on one face, an elephant on the next, a leopard on the third.
  • Four sculpted feet with a rosette at each corner, lifting the bowl and carrying the weight when it is full of water.
  • Copper underneath. The body is copper — the metal used for kalash and pooja vessels — nickel-plated and then oxidised, which is what gives the antique silver its depth in the recesses rather than a flat grey.

Which one do I need

Five antique-silver bowls, five different jobs. The others in the range:

Where it works

  • The centre of a dining table, filled with water and floating diyas
  • An entryway console, where guests pass it closely enough to see the animals
  • A coffee table as the single object on it
  • A covered patio table for an outdoor Diwali or a mehndi evening
  • Empty on a sideboard — the relief work carries the piece without anything in it

Gifting

At this size and weight it reads as a milestone gift: a significant wedding present, a fiftieth birthday, a new house. The animal work makes it the one people remember, and it does not require the recipient to be observant to enjoy it. It suits Diwali, griha pravesh and wedding gifting. Frequently asked questions

What animals are on it?
Elephants, leaping deer, a spotted leopard and peacocks, set among dense flowering vines. The panels differ around the bowl.
Is the pattern engraved?
No. It is raised work — pushed out from behind and finished from the front — which is why the figures catch light the way they do. Our 7.5-inch bowl is pierced, the 9-inch has raised floral panels and the 13.5-inch carries elephants alone; this is the only one in the range with a full scene of different animals.
How big is 17 inches in practice?
Wider than a large dinner plate and 6 inches tall. On a standard six-seat dining table it occupies the centre and leaves room to set places around it. Measure your table before ordering if it is a narrow one.
Can I fill it with water?
Yes. Fill it, float flower heads or floating candles, and empty and dry it the same evening. Standing water left in a plated bowl for days will mark the finish.
Can it go outside?
For an evening, under cover, yes — several of our photographs are outdoors. Do not leave it out in weather or overnight; damp and plating do not get on.
Is this German silver?
Not literally, and we would rather say so plainly. German silver — also sold as nickel silver — is a copper, nickel and zinc alloy that contains no silver in it at all. This bowl is copper, nickel-plated and then oxidised so the darkening settles into the recesses of the pattern. A lot of this category gets sold as German silver regardless of what is actually underneath, so it is worth knowing which you are buying.
How do I clean it?
Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Do not put it in the dishwasher and do not use abrasive scourers or acidic cleaners — they will cut through the plating. Between uses, store it in a sealed plastic bag; that slows tarnishing more than anything else you can do.
Will it tarnish?
Silver plating darkens over time, and the antique finish is designed to sit in the recesses and deepen the pattern as it does. That is the intended look. If you want it brighter, a light buff with a dry cloth on the raised areas will lift it.
Can I serve fruit or snacks in it?
Fruit in skins is fine, and it looks good that way. We would not serve loose or wet food directly on the plated surface.
Can I order several for an event?
Yes — get in touch before you order if you need more than a few. We can usually help on price for larger quantities and confirm stock before you commit to a date.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every order is insured. Photograph the box and the piece and contact us, and we will sort out a replacement or a refund.
