An urli is a wide Indian bowl filled with water so that flower heads and floating diyas sit on the surface. This is the largest we make in antique silver — 26 inches across, 4.2 kg, with a band of engraved leaf scrollwork running right round the outside, a cast handle at each side and a lotus medallion etched into the floor of the bowl.

Product details

  • Outer diameter: 26 inches
  • Height: 7 inches
  • Weight: 4.2 kg (approx. 9.3 lb)
  • Material: brass, nickel-plated and oxidised to an antique silver finish
  • Decoration: engraved leaf scrollwork band; etched lotus medallion inside
  • Handles: one cast handle each side
  • Feet: four cast feet
  • Handmade in India
  • Sold as a single bowl

Why this one

  • 4.2 kg of brass — approx. 9.3 lb — before you put anything in it. Filled with water it is a two-person lift. That mass is the reason it sits dead still on a table and does not ring when you set something down in it.
  • It has handles. A cast handle at each side, which none of our other urlis have. On a 26-inch bowl that is a practical feature, not a decorative one — it is how you move it when it is full.
  • 26 inches across. This is dining-table-centrepiece scale, the size used at the entrance to a mandap or in a hotel lobby.
  • Etched inside as well as out. A lotus medallion is worked into the base, so there is something to look at through the water when the bowl is filled.

Which one do I need

Five antique-silver bowls, five different jobs. The others in the range:

Where it works

  • A long dining table, as the one object down the centre
  • An entrance foyer on a round table, floating diyas and marigolds for Diwali
  • The entrance to a mandap or a reception table at a wedding
  • A kitchen island as a fruit bowl — it takes a full shop of pomegranates, grapes and citrus
  • A covered terrace for an evening event

Gifting

This is the piece people buy for a wedding, a landmark anniversary or a new house where they want the gift to be the one that gets talked about. It is heavy, it is large, and it is obviously handmade. Event planners and venues order it for mandap entrances and reception tables — if you need more than one, get in touch before ordering so we can confirm stock against your date and talk about price.

Frequently asked questions

One of the photographs shows three bowls stacked together. What do I actually get?
One bowl — the 26-inch one. The smaller bowls in that photograph are there to show the scale and are not included.
How heavy is it to handle?
4.2 kg empty, which one person manages comfortably by the two side handles. Filled with water it is considerably more — fill it in place rather than carrying it full.
Will it fit my table?
26 inches is wide. On a table narrower than about 36 inches it will dominate and leave little room for place settings. Measure first. If it is too large, the 17-inch jungle bowl is the next size down.
Can I fill it with water?
Yes. Fill it, float flower heads or floating candles, and empty and dry it the same evening. Standing water left in a plated bowl for days will mark the finish.
How much water does it take?
Enough that we would fill it with a jug rather than carry it to a tap. Two to three inches of water is plenty to float diyas and flower heads; you do not need to fill it to the rim.
Can I use it as a fruit bowl?
Yes, and it is one of the nicer uses for it between festivals. Fruit in skins, not cut or wet food.
Is this German silver?
Not literally, and we would rather say so plainly. German silver — also sold as nickel silver — is a copper, nickel and zinc alloy that contains no silver in it at all. This bowl is brass, nickel-plated and then oxidised so the darkening settles into the recesses of the pattern. A lot of this category gets sold as German silver regardless of what is actually underneath, so it is worth knowing which you are buying.
How do I clean it?
Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Do not put it in the dishwasher and do not use abrasive scourers or acidic cleaners — they will cut through the plating. Between uses, store it in a sealed plastic bag; that slows tarnishing more than anything else you can do.
Will it tarnish?
Silver plating darkens over time and the antique finish is meant to deepen in the recesses of the leaf work as it does. On a piece this size that ageing looks right. A dry cloth over the raised areas brightens it again.
Is it suitable outdoors?
Under cover for an evening, yes. Not in weather and not overnight.
Can I order several for an event?
Yes — get in touch before you order if you need more than a few. We can usually help on price for larger quantities and confirm stock before you commit to a date.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every order is insured. Photograph the box and the piece and contact us, and we will sort out a replacement or a refund.
