36-Inch Mandala Mirror Wall Art – Hawaii Rainforest

Green and deep blue over near-black, with narrow gold banding and small mirror chips set into the rings so the whole disc flickers when the light moves. Three feet across, with a 12-inch mirror at the centre. It is the coolest-toned of the four mandalas we make at this size and the one that changes most between daylight and lamplight.

How it is painted

Freehand from the centre out. What separates this one from its siblings is the inlay: alongside the painted rings, small pieces of mirror are set individually into the surface, scattered rather than regimented. In a lit room they pick up and drop light as you move past, which no amount of paint can imitate.

Why Hawaii Rainforest

One of four mandalas in this size, each named for a place and painted in its colours. This one takes the layered greens and wet blue-black of rainforest canopy. The others are California Poppy, Hawa Mahal and Peacock.

Where it goes

Give it light. The inlay is the argument for this one over the other three, and in a flat-lit corner you lose it entirely — hang it where a lamp, a window or a picture light can reach it. Works well against warm white, cream and wood; on a dark wall the greens disappear.

Check the size before you buy

Cut a 36-inch circle out of newspaper and tape it up where it will hang. Three feet is larger than a photograph suggests.

Hanging it

Two hooks on the back rather than one, so the disc cannot rotate out of true. At 5.6 kg both fixings need studs or rated drywall anchors. Two people: one to hold, one to mark. Screws and wall anchors are not supplied.

Care

Dust with a dry, soft cloth or a soft brush — the inlaid chips have edges and a cloth can catch. Glass cleaner on the centre mirror only, applied to the cloth. Never spray liquid at the inlay.
