Hand-decorated cotton parasols in assorted Bandhani colours, 25 inches across when open and 230 g each. Bought in fives, tens and twenty-fives for mandaps, ceilings and photo backdrops.

What these are

The decorated parasol is standard equipment at a Rajasthani wedding - hung in clusters over a mandap, carried in a procession, or staked along a path. Bandhani is the tie-dye technique behind the pattern: the cloth is pinched and bound in thousands of points before dyeing, so the dots are resisted rather than printed.

Why this one

A solid cotton canopy worked with mirror discs and metallic thread, finished with aari lace and sitara work around the edge. At 230 g each they hang without sagging on fishing line and stay put outdoors in light wind. The colours are assorted across the set, which is what makes a cluster read - a group of one colour reads as a single block.

Which set size

  • Set of 5 - $70, or $14 each. Enough for one backdrop, an aisle, or a photo corner.
  • Set of 10 - $120, or $12 each. A ceiling cluster over a mandap or a dance floor.
  • Set of 25 - $240, or $9.60 each. Full-venue coverage, or a hall ceiling.

All three sets are the same umbrella. Larger events usually need more than people expect - a ceiling cluster reads as sparse below about ten, and a single row of five along a wall reads as deliberate. If you need a quantity we do not list, email contact@urliutsav.com.

Where they go

Hung upside down in a cluster over a mandap, a dance floor or a dining table. Along an aisle or a driveway, staked into the ground. Open against a wall as a photo backdrop. Carried in a baraat. Over a haldi or mehendi seating area outdoors. Kept open in a corner of a room after the event, which is what most people end up doing with a few of them.

The rest of the range

We stock four canopies in two families. The printed and embroidered ones have a solid canopy worked with mirrors and metallic thread - these read as colour from across a room. The cutwork lace ones are perforated, so light comes through the pattern and they photograph as texture rather than as a block of colour.

Printed and embroidered: gold print on silk, five colours. Cutwork lace: white cutwork lace and yellow cutwork lace.

Frequently asked questions

What colours will I get?
Assorted - the set is mixed rather than matched, which is how these are made and how they are meant to hang. If you need a specific colour weighting for an event palette, email contact@urliutsav.com before ordering and we will tell you what we can do.
What is Bandhani?
A tie-resist dyeing technique from Gujarat and Rajasthan. The cloth is pinched into thousands of tiny points and bound with thread before it goes into the dye, so those points stay undyed. The result is the dotted pattern you see on the canopy.
Are these waterproof? Can I use them in the rain?
No. These are decorative parasols, not rain umbrellas. The canopies are unlined cotton or silk - some of them perforated on purpose - so rain goes through. Keep them dry and they will last through many events.
How do I hang them?
Most people hang them upside down from the canopy using fishing line or thin wire through the rib tips, or stake the handle into the ground outdoors. The shaft is a slim wooden pole, so it takes a zip tie or a length of twine easily. We do not supply hanging hardware.
Will they all look identical?
No. They are handworked, so the embroidery, the cutting and the placement of the mirrors vary from one umbrella to the next. In a cluster that reads as intentional rather than as a fault.
Can I reuse them after the event?
Yes - that is most of the point at this price. Close them, keep them dry and store them flat or hanging. The fabric creases where it folds; opening them a day early lets the folds drop out.
How do they arrive?
Folded and boxed together, closed, not individually wrapped. Open each one before the event to let the fold lines relax.
How do I clean them?
Spot clean with a barely damp cloth, or dry clean. Do not soak them - the mirror work and the metallic thread do not take washing, and a wet canopy dries misshapen.
What if one arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph it, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace it or make it right. Tell us your event date in the same email and we will prioritise it.
Can I return them?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer. Because these are bought to a date, order early enough to open the box and check them with time to spare.
