The taijitu - the yin yang - is the Taoist diagram of two forces that contain each other: the dark half holds a light dot, the light half a dark one. On this 24-inch disc the symbol sits at the centre of a hand-painted mandala, the rings worked outward from it in dot and petal detail.

How it is painted
The two teardrops are laid in first and the mandala is built around them ring by ring, freehand, from the centre out. Keeping a mandala true on a two-foot circle without a stencil is the whole difficulty of the piece - the spacing is held by eye, and small variations in the outer bands are the evidence that a hand made it.
Why this one
2,130 g (approx. 4.7 lb) on a rigid 10 mm board. Yin yang decor is usually sold as a printed canvas or a cut metal silhouette; this is a painted surface with dot work you can see from an angle. It is also the quietest disc in the 24-inch series - largely monochrome, which is why it works in a meditation room where the Kathakali face would be too loud.
Where it goes
Meditation and yoga rooms, above a low bench or altar, in a bedroom over the headboard, or in a reading corner. It is one of the few pieces here that reads as neutral rather than Indian, so it sits comfortably in a room with no other ethnic decor.
The rest of the series
Five 24-inch discs share this format, each a different subject: the Adiyogi Shiva, the Warli village scene, the Kathakali face and the maroon and blue mandala. Hung as a pair or a row of three they read as a set, because the diameter and the thickness match exactly.
Hanging it
A hook is fitted to the back. At this weight the fixing should go into a stud or a drywall anchor rated for it - a plain picture nail is not enough. Screws and wall anchors are not supplied.
Care
Dust with a dry, soft cloth. If there is mirror inlay, use glass cleaner on the mirror only, applied to the cloth rather than sprayed, so nothing runs onto the paint.
