How this differs from our mats

Our other rangoli products are single wool mats: one piece, one fixed layout. This one is a set of separate rigid pieces, so the arrangement is yours. Cluster them tight for a 24 inch circle, spread them into a wider ring, run them down a hallway, or use the centrepiece alone on a coffee table. It is the version to buy if you want the layout to change room to room, and the one to avoid if you want something you can put down in five seconds.

Which set

• Trishul - $65. Eight decorative side pieces plus one floral centrepiece. Nine pieces in total.
• Hexagon - $70. Twelve decorative side pieces plus one floral centrepiece. Thirteen pieces in total, and the one that fills a larger space.

The names describe the shape of the side pieces. Both assemble to roughly 24 inches when clustered; the Hexagon set spreads considerably wider if you want it to.

Why this one

The detailing is the argument. Gota lace, mirror discs, beaded pearls, coloured stones and pom poms are applied by hand onto each piece - this is the sort of surface that only reads properly in person, and it catches tealight and lamp light in a way a flat mat does not. The MDF base means the pieces stay rigid and lie flat, and they will not crease or fray in storage.

Where it goes

At an entrance, arranged on the floor. On a coffee table as a centrepiece with the side pieces spread around it. At the base of a staircase. In front of a mandir. Down the middle of a dining table for a festival meal, which is where the flexible layout pays off. Pair with tealights in holders around the outside.

The rest of the range

We make four: the 3FT round mat in eleven designs, the round mat in 3FT and 4FT and the border mat set of two. The round mats sit in the middle of a floor or under a lamp; the border set runs along a threshold; the pom-pom set is rigid pieces you arrange rather than a single mat.
