What a border rangoli is

Not every rangoli is a circle. The border form - a long band worked along the doorstep - is what most households actually draw, because it frames the entrance and does not get walked through. These are that shape, in wool yarn on a backed base, two to a set.

Rangoli is drawn on the floor at the threshold - traditionally in rice flour, coloured powder or flower petals, redrawn each morning of a festival. It is beautiful and it is a lot of work, and it is gone by evening. A rangoli mat is the same design worked in wool yarn on a backed base, so it goes down in seconds, survives being walked past, and comes out again next year.

Why a set of two

Because one is rarely the right length. Each mat is 3 feet long: one covers a standard single door, two laid end to end cover a double door or a wide hallway, and two facing each other frame a passage. Buying them singly would mean most people ordering twice, so we sell the pair.

You receive two mats of the design you choose, not one of each. The scallop design is the only one with tassels.

Along the front doorstep, which is what they are for. Across a double-door threshold, end to end. Down either side of a hallway. At the base of a staircase. Along the front edge of a mandir or a pooja shelf. Against the wall behind a low table at a ceremony.

The rest of the range

We make four: the 3FT round mat in eleven designs, the round mat in 3FT and 4FT and the pom-pom and mirror rangoli set. The round mats sit in the middle of a floor or under a lamp; the border set runs along a threshold; the pom-pom set is rigid pieces you arrange rather than a single mat.

Gifting

A rangoli mat is one of the safest gifts to send an Indian household in the US - it needs no sizing, it is used every festival, and it solves a problem the recipient actually has. Tell us at checkout if you are sending it directly and we will leave the invoice out.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get two of the same design or one of each?
Two of the same. Choose one design and both mats in the set match, which is what you want if they are going end to end across one doorway.
How long is the pair laid end to end?
Six feet, which covers most double doors and a good stretch of hallway. Each mat is 3 feet on its own.
How do I clean it?
Spot clean with mild detergent and cool water, then let it dry flat. Do not machine wash and do not dry clean - wool yarn on a backed base is not built for a drum, and soaking will lift the backing.
Can people walk on it in shoes?
It is built to be walked past rather than walked on repeatedly in outdoor shoes. Treat it as floor decor rather than a doormat - it is not made to scrape grit off soles.
Can I put diyas on it?
Only in a holder with a solid base, or on a small tray. Wool yarn will scorch and it will catch. Tealights in metal or glass holders are the safe version and they look better anyway.
Can I put it outside the front door?
On a covered porch or an apartment landing, yes, and that is where a lot of them go. Not somewhere it will be rained on or sit in standing water. Bring it in after the festival and it will last years.
Will mine look exactly like the photograph?
The design will. Because the yarn is laid by hand, the density of the embroidery and the exact placement of the colours vary slightly from mat to mat.
How do I store it between festivals?
Roll it rather than folding it, pattern side out, and keep it somewhere dry. A folded crease in the yarn takes a while to drop out; a rolled one does not form.
What if it arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph it, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace it or make it right. Tell us your festival date in the same email and we will prioritise it.
Can I return it?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer.
