The Golden Gate Bridge in nail and thread: two towers, the main cable sweeping between them, the deck below, wound in the bridge's own orange-red across a 24 by 12 inch board. It is the only non-Indian subject in our range, and it exists because we ship everything from San Ramon, a few miles from the bridge itself.

Product details

  • 24 inches wide x 12 inches high
  • 10 mm thick
  • Weight: 1,875 g (approx. 4.1 lb)
  • MDF board with nails and red thread
  • Handmade in India, signed by the artist Ekta Thakur Sharma
  • Hanging hooks fitted to the back
  • Arrives framed and ready to hang

How it is made

Hundreds of nails are driven into a wooden board along the outline of the image, and coloured thread is then wound between them, pass after pass, until the density of the crossings builds the picture. Nothing is printed and nothing is glued down. The shading you see is thread laid more or less thickly, which is why the surface changes as you move past it.

Why this one

The suspension cables are the hard part. Each one is a straight run of thread between two nails, and the curve of the main cable only appears because dozens of straight lines are laid at shifting angles - the same trick that makes string art of a bridge more convincing than string art of almost anything else. 1,875 g (approx. 4.1 lb) on a rigid 10 mm board, in landscape format at two feet wide.

Where it goes

Above a media console, a desk, a bar cart or a hallway bench. The landscape shape suits the space over a sofa where a round piece would look stranded, and it is the natural gift for anyone who has lived in the Bay Area.

The other string art pieces

Two more are made the same way, both 30 inches across: the Ganesha face and the Om (AUM) wheel. All three are signed by the artist, Ekta Thakur Sharma.

Hanging it

Hooks are fitted to the back. Fix into a stud or a drywall anchor rated for the weight; a plain picture nail will not hold. Screws and wall anchors are not supplied.

Care

Dust occasionally with a soft dry brush or a low-suction vacuum brush attachment. Keep water and cleaning sprays away from the threads - they will mark and sag.

Frequently asked questions

What colour is the thread?
Red, close to the bridge's own international orange. It reads brighter in daylight and deeper under warm indoor light.
Is the image printed on the board?
No. The board is the backdrop and every line you see is thread wound between nails.
Is it signed?
Yes. Each piece is signed by the artist, Ekta Thakur Sharma.
Can a thread come loose?
The winding is tensioned and anchored on nails, so a single strand cannot unravel the piece. If a loop is knocked out of place it can be eased back with a fingertip.
How heavy is it?
1,875 g, about 4.1 lb - the lightest of the three string art pieces. A rated drywall anchor is enough; a plain picture nail is not.
Is this an officially licensed Golden Gate Bridge product?
No. It is an original handmade artwork of a public landmark, with no affiliation to the bridge authority.
Does it work as a leaving or relocation gift?
That is what most of them are bought for - people leaving the Bay Area, or arriving. It also does well as a corporate gift for Bay Area offices.
What if it arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph the damage, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace it or make it right.
Can I return it?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer, so measure your wall first.
Can I order several?
For hospitality, restaurants, stores or corporate gifting, email contact@urliutsav.com and we will quote you for a bulk order.
