Om, written AUM, is the syllable Hindu tradition treats as the first sound - three curves, a crescent and a dot, standing for waking, dreaming, deep sleep and the silence beyond them. Here it is wound in white thread at the centre of a thirty-inch wheel of coloured petals, with small mirrors set into the surround.

How it is made
Hundreds of nails are driven into a wooden board along the outline of the image, and coloured thread is then wound between them, pass after pass, until the density of the crossings builds the picture. Nothing is printed and nothing is glued down. The shading you see is thread laid more or less thickly, which is why the surface changes as you move past it.
Why this one
Two and a half feet across, 4,350 g - about 9.6 lb. The Om itself is wound in white so it stays legible against the colour behind it, and tiny mirrors are set into the outer band, which is the detail that separates this from the Ganesha piece. Most Om wall decor is cut metal or a vinyl decal; this has depth you can see from an angle and a surface that changes as the light moves.
Where it goes
Yoga and meditation rooms, above an altar or mandir, in a studio reception, on a stair wall, or over a fireplace. It is the piece people buy for a room they want to sit in rather than pass through.
The other string art pieces
Two more are made the same way: the Ganesha face in the same 30-inch size, and the Golden Gate Bridge in landscape format. All three are signed by the artist, Ekta Thakur Sharma.
Hanging it
Hooks are fitted to the back. Fix into a stud or a drywall anchor rated for the weight; a plain picture nail will not hold. Screws and wall anchors are not supplied.
Care
Dust occasionally with a soft dry brush or a low-suction vacuum brush attachment. Keep water and cleaning sprays away from the threads - they will mark and sag.
