Ganesha is the elephant-headed deity invoked at the start of anything new - a house, a business, a journey - because he is the remover of obstacles. This is his face rendered in nail and thread: two and a half feet across, the features wound in tan and brown thread, set inside a mandala of coloured petals.

How it is made

Hundreds of nails are driven into a wooden board along the outline of the image, and coloured thread is then wound between them, pass after pass, until the density of the crossings builds the picture. Nothing is printed and nothing is glued down. The shading you see is thread laid more or less thickly, which is why the surface changes as you move past it.

Why this one

Two and a half feet across and 4,840 g - about 10.7 lb, the heaviest wall piece we sell after the three-foot mandala mirrors. Almost all of that weight is nails. It is also the only Ganesha in the range that is not painted, carved or cast, which is the point: at a distance the face reads as shaded portraiture, and up close it dissolves into thread. The board is fireproof-grade MDF and the piece arrives framed and ready to hang.

Where it goes

Above a pooja altar or mandir, on an entry wall facing the front door, behind a Ganesh Chaturthi setup, in a yoga room, or over a fireplace. At thirty inches it needs a clear wall - do not put it inside a gallery grouping.

Hanging it

Hooks are fitted to the back. Fix into a stud or a drywall anchor rated for the weight; a plain picture nail will not hold. Screws and wall anchors are not supplied.

Care

Dust occasionally with a soft dry brush or a low-suction vacuum brush attachment. Keep water and cleaning sprays away from the threads - they will mark and sag.

How large is it really?
Thirty inches across - two and a half feet. Cut a 30-inch circle from newspaper and tape it up before ordering. Round pieces read larger on a wall than they do in a photograph.
Is the thread cotton?
It is coloured craft thread wound over steel nails. Colours are as photographed; because each piece is wound by hand the density varies slightly between them.
Is it signed?
Yes. Each piece is signed by the artist, Ekta Thakur Sharma.
Can a thread come loose?
The winding is tensioned and anchored on nails, so a single strand cannot unravel the piece. If a loop is knocked out of place it can be eased back with a fingertip.
How heavy is it?
4,840 g, about 10.7 lb. Both hooks should go into studs or into anchors rated for that weight. This is a two-person job to hang.
Does it need a frame or glass?
No. It arrives framed and ready to hang, and it is meant to be seen without glass - the texture is the point.
Can I use it for a Ganesh Chaturthi backdrop?
Yes. It also works for griha pravesh and Diwali setups, and it stays up year-round rather than being a seasonal piece.
What if it arrives damaged?
