Two pieces, carved from mango wood and left in the natural grain, with the pattern laid over the top in white: dots, scrolls and fine line work covering the whole body. Choose the giraffes - one standing tall, one with its head down grazing - or the birds, a matched pair on turned stands.

Why this one
The restraint is the point. Almost everything else in this range is painted in strong colour; these are bare wood with white on top, which is why they sit in a room that has no other Indian decor in it. The white work is freehand - look closely at the dot rows and you can see them breathe in spacing - and it is applied over the raw grain rather than over a base coat, so the wood shows through.
Giraffes or birds
- Giraffe set - two pieces, one 14 inches tall and one 9 inches with its head lowered. 1.2 kg for the pair. The taller of the two options, and the one that reads as a sculpture rather than an ornament.
- Bird set - two matched birds, 10 inches tall and 6 wide, each on its own turned stand. 500 g for the pair. Lighter, smaller, and easier to fit on a bookshelf.
Both sets come as two pieces, and both are priced per set rather than per piece. The giraffes are the more expensive of the two because there is considerably more wood in them.
Where they go
Bookshelves, a console, a mantel, a desk, or a nursery. The height difference in the giraffe pair does the work - one up, one down - so they want to be placed together rather than at opposite ends of a shelf. The birds suit a windowsill or a narrow ledge where a taller piece would not fit.
Gifting
The set to give someone whose taste you are not sure of. Natural wood and white reads as neutral rather than specifically Indian, so it lands in a minimalist flat as easily as in a traditional home. Housewarmings, weddings, a new baby - the giraffe pair in particular gets bought for nurseries.
Care
Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Keep water and cleaning sprays off the painted detail, and do not soak it. Mango wood does not like standing damp or direct all-day sun.
