An ambabari is the canopied seat carried on an elephant's back in Rajasthani processions — a small domed pavilion with its own roof and pillars. This pair of walking elephants carries one each, engraved down to the headdress, the body mat and the canopy fringe, and stands 10 inches tall.

Product details

  • Sold as a pair
  • Height: 10 inches. Length: 7.5 inches
  • Weight: 2,084 g for the pair (approx. 4.6 lb)
  • Material: aluminium, plated and oxidised to an antique silver finish
  • Decoration: engraved ambabari howdah, headdress, ear plates and body mat
  • Handmade in India
  • Not dishwasher safe

Why this one

  • A pair, walking, facing each other. Bought singly an elephant is an ornament; a facing pair reads as an entrance, which is how these are traditionally placed.
  • The howdah is a separate structure, not a bump on the back. Pillars, a domed roof and a fringe, all engraved.
  • Detailed where it counts. The headdress, the ear plates and the body mat each carry their own pattern rather than sharing one.
  • Aluminium, so you can actually place them. 2,084 g for the pair — light enough to sit on a shelf or a mandir ledge without worrying about the shelf.

About the metal

These are aluminium, plated and oxidised to antique silver, which is different from the brass and copper pieces elsewhere in this range. It is a deliberate choice for a sculpture at this size: brass elephants of the same dimensions would weigh three times as much and cost several times more.

Where it works

  • An entryway console, the two facing each other
  • Either side of a mandir or a shrine
  • A mantelpiece or a bookshelf
  • A wedding or reception welcome table
  • A study or an office, where a pair of elephants reads as a collected object

Gifting

Elephants are the safest animal to give in Indian decor — auspicious, universally liked, and not tied to any one deity or region, so you do not need to know the recipient's tradition. A facing pair suits a housewarming or griha pravesh, a wedding, an anniversary and a new business. Plain packaging with no price on it. Ordering several pairs for an event or corporate gifting — get in touch first and we will confirm stock.

Frequently asked questions

Is this one elephant or two?
Two. The price is for the pair, and they are made to face each other.
What is an ambabari?
The canopied seat strapped to an elephant's back for processions and royal parades in Rajasthan — sometimes called a howdah. On these statues it is modelled as a small domed pavilion with pillars.
How heavy are they?
2,084 g for the pair, so a bit over a kilo each. They sit on an ordinary shelf without any concern.
Is this German silver?
No. German silver — also sold as nickel silver — is a copper, nickel and zinc alloy that contains no silver in it at all. This pair is aluminium, plated and then oxidised to the antique silver finish. Aluminium is why a 10-inch elephant weighs what it does rather than being a two-hand lift, and it is the reason a pair this size sits at $115 rather than several hundred.
Are they solid or hollow?
Cast hollow, as sculptures at this size normally are. That is what keeps the weight sensible.
Are the two identical?
They are a mirrored pair, made to face inward. Small variations in the engraving are normal on handmade pieces.
How do I clean it?
Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Do not put it in the dishwasher and do not use abrasive scourers or acidic cleaners — they will cut through the plating. Between uses, store it in a sealed plastic bag; that slows tarnishing more than anything else you can do.
Will it tarnish?
Silver plating darkens over time, and the antique finish is designed to sit in the recesses and deepen the pattern as it does. That is the intended look. If you want it brighter, a light buff with a dry cloth on the raised areas will lift it.
Can I order several for an event?
Yes — get in touch before you order if you need more than a few. We can usually help on price for larger quantities and confirm stock before you commit to a date.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every order is insured. Photograph the box and the piece and contact us, and we will sort out a replacement or a refund.
