Two green parrots face one another at the crown, beak to beak over an arched mirror opening; a pink lotus opens beneath it, and the whole thing tapers into a carved column and a flared foot. Eighteen inches tall, eight wide - a small mirror in the South Indian temple-carving idiom, hand-carved and hand-painted.

Why this one

It is a carved object rather than a printed frame. The parrots stand proud of the surface, their feathers cut individually, and the lotus petals are layered rather than drawn. 900 g - two pounds - across 18 inches, which is what tells you the relief has real depth behind it. The mirror itself is small and arched; this is a piece you hang for the frame, and the reflection is a bonus.

Where it goes

Beside a front door, above a narrow console, in a powder room, at the top of a stair, or hung as a pair either side of a larger piece. At eight inches wide it fits the narrow strips of wall that defeat most mirrors. It also works as a faux window on a windowless wall.

Hanging it

A sawtooth hook is fitted to the back. At 900 g a rated drywall anchor or a small screw into a stud is enough. Screws and anchors are not supplied.

Care

Dust the carving with a soft dry brush - the feather cuts and lotus petals hold dust. Glass cleaner on the mirror only, applied to a cloth and not sprayed, so nothing runs into the paint.

Frequently asked questions

Are the birds parrots or peacocks?
Parrots. Green bodies, red beaks, facing each other at the crown - look at the close-up photograph of the top of the frame.
How big is the mirror itself?
Small - an arched opening inside an 18 by 8 inch frame. Enough for a glance at the door, not a dressing mirror.
Is the carving real, or moulded?
Hand-carved relief. Run a finger over the parrots and you can feel the feather cuts.
Can I hang it in a bathroom?
A powder room with good ventilation is fine. A shower room is not - the paint and the wood both suffer in steam.
Do the parrots mean anything?
Parrots appear constantly in Indian decorative carving as birds of speech and companionship, and the parrot is the vehicle of Kamadeva. The lotus below is the standard emblem of purity.
Will two of them match?
Closely, but each is carved and painted by hand, so a pair will have small differences in the feather detail and the exact pink of the lotus.
What if it arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph the damage, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace it or make it right.
Can I return it?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer, so check the dimensions against your wall first.
Can I order several?
For hospitality, restaurants, stores or corporate gifting, email contact@urliutsav.com and we will quote you for a bulk order.
