A Rajasthani man with his hands folded in namaste, greeting whoever walks in. The turban is red and green with gold banding, the moustache is enormous, the kurta is green — and all of it stands off the panel in raised relief rather than being painted flat. He sits inside a mustard jharokha arch on a deep blue field worked in fine white dots.
This is one half of a pair. The woman in namaste is the other, and most customers hang them together on either side of a doorway.

How it is made
The turban, the face, the moustache and the folded hands are cut as separate layers and built up on the panel, so the piece reads in depth from across a room. The painting follows: the gold banding on the turban, the dotted border of the kurta, the white dot work across the blue field. The dots are laid one at a time by hand, which is what gives the ground its slight irregularity.
Where it goes
Entryways, almost always. A pair either side of the front door is the traditional arrangement and the one in the photographs. Also used flanking a mandir, at the top of a staircase, or in a restaurant or shop entrance where the greeting does actual work.
Hanging it
Fittings are on the back. At 1.73 kg use a screw into a drywall anchor. If you are hanging the pair, measure the gap first — they look best with the same clearance either side of the door frame, and the panels are 16 inches wide. Screws and wall anchors are not supplied.
Care
Dust with a dry, soft brush, working around the raised turban and hands. Do not spray liquid at the surface.
