Peacock Lippan Wall Art – 24x24 Jharokha Panel with Mirror Work

Two feet square, and the largest single panel we make. A peacock stands in raised relief inside a scalloped jharokha arch on a mustard ground, tail spread, with magenta blossom on curving branches beside it. Outside the arch the whole field is filled with a dense mosaic of small mirror pieces, so the bird sits against a surface that moves in the light.

Lippan, reinterpreted

Lippan kaam is the mud-and-mirror relief work of Kutch in Gujarat — raised patterns built up in clay on the walls of village houses, with mirror pieces pressed in while the clay is still soft. This panel is a modern reading of that tradition rather than a literal one. The relief is cut and layered in MDF instead of raised in mud, which is what lets it survive a centrally heated home and a courier network; the mirror work is real, set by hand piece by piece exactly as it always was.

We think that is worth saying plainly. The mirrors are glass, the painting is freehand, the relief is genuinely three-dimensional — and the substrate is wood board, not clay.

Where it goes

It is square and it is big, which makes it awkward in a gallery wall and excellent on its own — above a sideboard, at the top of a stairwell, on the one blank wall in an open-plan room. Give it a light source. The mirror field is doing most of the work and it needs something to reflect.

Hanging it

At 3.15 kg this needs a screw into a stud or a rated drywall anchor. It is the heaviest wall piece in the range — do not hang it on a nail in plasterboard. Screws and anchors are not supplied.

Care

Dust with a dry, soft brush. Never spray liquid at the surface: the mirror pieces are set into the relief and moisture will work under their edges.

Frequently asked questions

Is the peacock raised or painted flat?
Raised. The body and tail are cut and layered so they stand off the panel, then painted. You can see the shadow it throws in the angled photographs.

Is this real Lippan?
It is a modern interpretation. Traditional Lippan builds its relief in clay; here the relief is layered MDF. The mirror inlay — the part most people mean when they say Lippan — is done the traditional way, by hand, in real glass.

Are those real mirrors?
Yes — small pieces of real mirror glass, set individually by hand.

How big is it, really?
24 inches in both directions, so two feet square. Hold up a sheet of newspaper opened flat and you are close.
