A potli is the drawstring pouch Indian clothing used instead of pockets - gathered at the neck with a cord, carried by the wrist. These are made in Bandhani, the tie-dye of Gujarat and Rajasthan, and finished with gold tassels. Ten bags to a set, eight inches square, in an assortment of colours.

What Bandhani is

Bandhani, or bandhej, is tie-dye done at a scale that is hard to believe until you see it close up. The cloth is pinched into hundreds of tiny points, each one tied off with thread, then dyed - the tied points resist the dye and come out as dots. The word comes from bandhan, to tie. It is one of the oldest surviving dye traditions in India and the reason these bags have that speckled, uneven pattern rather than a printed one.

Why these

Ten bags for the price most places charge for two or three, and they are the return gift guests actually keep. A potli holds earrings, a ring, coins, a car key - so it stays in a drawer and gets reused instead of going in the bin the week after the wedding. 200 g for all ten, which means a set posts anywhere for almost nothing.

What is in the set

  • Ten bags in total, eight inches square
  • An assortment of colours - red, yellow, pink and a pale gold or ivory
  • Every bag has a drawstring neck and gold tassels

The colour split is fixed rather than chosen, and it is roughly two or three of each. Check the photographs for the exact shades.

Where they work

Wedding and mehndi favours, Diwali gift bags, a return gift table at a function, or filled with sweets and set at each place. Outside a function they are jewellery pouches - one bangle stack per bag keeps the whole lot from tangling in a suitcase.

Gifting

This is a bulk-gifting product first. Weddings, mehndi and haldi, Diwali, baby showers, a Golu, or a corporate Diwali hamper. Most customers fill them before giving - dry fruit, chocolates, a small silver coin, or the gift itself.

Care

Dry clean only. Bandhani is dyed rather than printed, so washing at home will bleed the colour. Keep them out of prolonged direct sun.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags do I get?
Ten. The price is for the whole set, not per bag.
Can I choose the colours?
No - the assortment is fixed. You get a spread across red, yellow, pink and a pale gold or ivory. If you need a single colour in quantity, email us and we will tell you what is available.
How big is eight inches, in practice?
About the size of a paperback. It takes a bangle stack, a jewellery set, a phone, or a handful of sweets - not a clutch you would carry to dinner.
Are they lined?
They are fabric pouches with a drawstring, made for dry items. Do not use them for anything oily or wet.
What is Bandhani?
A tie-dye technique from Gujarat and Rajasthan in which the cloth is tied off in hundreds of tiny points before dyeing, so the tied spots stay undyed. The dots are the signature.
Will mine look exactly like the photographs?
Close, not identical. Bandhani is a hand process, so the dot pattern and the depth of colour vary from bag to bag - that is what tells you it is not printed.
Can I order more than ten?
Yes. Email contact@urliutsav.com with your quantity and your date and we will quote you and confirm timing before you order.
What if they arrive damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph the damage, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace them or make it right.
Can I return them?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer.
