The large jharokha. At 20 × 16 inches it is nearly three times the panel area of our small ones, and the arch changes with it — a scalloped, multi-lobed cusped opening rather than the simple point, with room across the shoulders for the birds and vine work the painters do best. This is the piece that goes above a console and finishes the wall on its own.

The painting
Freehand white line work over a solid ground, laid down with a fine brush after the base coat has cured. On a panel this size the drawing has somewhere to go: facing birds in the upper corners, a peacock on the Orange Gold, vine running the full height of the sides. It takes an artisan the better part of a day. Look closely at any two of the same colour and the birds sit slightly differently — that is the tell that no stencil was involved.

- Deep Carmine — deep red with white birds and blossom
- Nile Blue — dark navy with a white floral scatter
- Orange Gold — golden yellow with a white peacock in the arch
- Blueberry Blue — bright cobalt with dense white florals
- Tree Green — mid green with white flowers and a butterfly
- Prussian Blue — muted mid blue with fine white line work
- Mid Gray — soft grey-blue with white birds
Where it goes
Above a console or a sideboard, where it works as a proper mirror as well as a painting. Entryway walls. Over a bathroom vanity, if the room is not steamy. Dining rooms — one reviewer has hers there. It is large enough to hold a wall alone, which is the main reason to choose it over two or three of the small ones.
Hanging it
A flat metal bracket is fitted to the back. At 2.8 kg use a screw into a stud, or a rated drywall anchor — this is heavier than it looks and a plain nail in plasterboard is not enough. Screws and wall anchors are not supplied.
Care
Glass cleaner on the mirror, applied to the cloth rather than sprayed on the frame. Dust the painted surface with a dry cloth only.
