A reversible king-size dohar - the lightweight three-layer quilt used across India in place of a duvet in warm weather. Cotton voile on both faces with a flannel layer between, block-printed by hand in Rajasthan, and a different print on each side.

What a dohar is

Not a comforter and not a bedspread. A dohar is three layers of light cotton quilted together - two printed voile faces with soft flannel in the middle - designed for a hot climate and, in practice, for an air-conditioned bedroom. It is warm enough to sleep under and light enough that you do not push it off at two in the morning. At 1.75 kg across a full king it weighs about a third of what a filled comforter does.

Why this one

Block-printed rather than screen-printed. The pattern is carved into a wooden block and stamped onto the cloth by hand, one repeat at a time, which is why the registration wanders very slightly and the colour sits in the fibre instead of on top of it. It is fully reversible - the second face is a different print, not a plain backing - so one quilt gives you two rooms.

Which design

Eight designs at 104 x 84 inches. Patchwork is the multicolour one, red, navy and tan squares. Paisley is a cream ground with small blue paisley buds. Palm is rust and brown palm trees. Elephant is blue elephants and umbrellas. Snapdragon, Blossom, Oasis and Daisy are the four florals - a white ground with blue teardrops, a teal floral with a pink border, a blue and cream vine, and a dense pink floral. The photographs run in the same order as the dropdown, and each design has its own reverse print shown in the folded shots.

Where it works

Over a king or a queen bed as the top layer - on a queen it hangs generously on both sides. As the summer replacement for a duvet. Folded across the foot of the bed for colour. On a sofa as the throw everyone reaches for. In a guest room, where reversible means you can flip it between visitors instead of laundering it.

Gifting

A quilt is one of the few gifts that works for a wedding, a housewarming and a fiftieth birthday without adjustment, and reversible means the recipient's taste only has to match one of the two faces. Tell us at checkout if you are sending it directly and we will leave the invoice out.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit a queen bed?
Yes, with more overhang. At 104 x 84 inches it is cut for a king, so on a queen it drops further down both sides - which many people prefer. On a king it covers the mattress with a normal drop.
How warm is it?
Light. Three thin layers rather than a filled quilt - warm enough for an air-conditioned room or a mild night, not a substitute for a winter duvet. That is what a dohar is for.
Can I machine wash it?
The care label says dry clean or spot clean, and that is what we will tell you. Hand block-printed cotton can release a little dye on a first wash, which is why the maker specifies it. If washing matters to you, email contact@urliutsav.com before ordering and we will tell you what customers have found.
Is it really reversible?
Yes. Both faces are printed cotton voile with their own design - there is no plain backing. The folded photographs show each pairing.
Will the print be exactly as photographed?
The design will, the placement will not. Each block is stamped by hand, so where the repeat falls across the quilt differs from piece to piece and small irregularities in the printing are normal.
Will the colours run?
Natural dyes on hand block-printed cotton can bleed slightly when wet, which is the reason for the dry-clean instruction. Blot a spill rather than soaking it.
Is it one piece or a set?
One quilt. No pillow shams or covers are included.
What if it arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph the problem, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace it or make it right.

Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging.
