A cardboard tissue box, hidden inside a hand-painted mango wood case with a brass hasp latch and block feet. The lid carries a panel of floral medallions in the Rajasthani tile idiom and a scalloped mandala cutout that the tissues come up through. Nine inches by five and a half.

Why this one

912 g - two pounds - which is what stops it sliding around when you pull a tissue. That is the practical test most decorative tissue covers fail. The painting is layered freehand rather than printed: individual medallions in contrasting jewel tones inside a diamond border, with the brass hasp and the raised feet giving it the look of a small piece of furniture rather than a cover. Mango wood is the standard timber for painted Rajasthani woodwork: dense enough to carve and hold a hinge, and cut from trees at the end of their fruiting life rather than felled for timber, which is why it is the sustainable choice in Indian craft.

How do you refill it?
The lid lifts, held by a brass hasp latch on the front. Drop the box in, close the lid, pull the first tissue through the cutout.
Is the wood painted all over?
No. The panels and borders are painted; the raw mango wood grain shows at the edges and on the feet, which is deliberate.
Will it slide when I pull a tissue?
Not usually - at two pounds it stays put, and the block feet grip better than a flat base.
Will mine look exactly like the photograph?
Close, not identical. Every piece is painted freehand, so line weight and the exact placing of the motifs shift a little between pieces.
Can it go in a bathroom?
A dry guest bathroom or powder room is fine. Keep it out of a shower room - steam lifts enamel off wood over time.
Is it food safe or waterproof?
