Three etched gold plates with scalloped edges, 9, 11 and 14 inches across, that nest inside each other for storage and spread out as a group when you need them. The whole surface of each is worked in a hammered mandala pattern, so the gold catches light unevenly rather than reflecting flat.

Product details

  • Set of 3 plates: 9 inches (23 cm), 11 inches (28 cm), 14 inches (35 cm)
  • Total weight: 1,530 g (approx. 3.4 lb)
  • Material: iron with a gold polish finish
  • Finish: hammered and etched mandala pattern, scalloped edge
  • Handmade in India
  • Not dishwasher safe. Keep dry.

Why this one

  • Three sizes for the price of one good piece. 9, 11 and 14 inches, which covers a single-diya shelf vignette right up to a table centrepiece.
  • They nest. Stacked, the three take the shelf space of one. That matters for something used a few times a year.
  • Etched all over, not just the rim. The mandala pattern runs across the whole face of each plate, so they still read as decorated when empty.
  • 1,530 g (approx. 3.4 lb) for the set. Each plate has enough weight to stay put when people are reaching into it.

How the three sizes get used

  • 14 inch — the haldi paste at a ceremony, or the main plate on a table
  • 11 inch — rose petals, rings, or a group of tealights
  • 9 inch — kumkum, supari, a single diya or a small idol

Out of ceremony season, most people keep the 14-inch out on a console and put the other two away inside it.

Where it works

  • A haldi or mehndi ceremony, one plate per element
  • A dining table at Diwali, all three down the centre with tealights
  • An entryway console, the largest one alone
  • A mandir shelf as offering plates
  • Serving dry fruit and mithai at a gathering

Gifting

A set of three is easier to give than a single plate, because the recipient gets something they can arrange rather than one object to place. It suits a wedding, a housewarming or griha pravesh, Diwali and Varalakshmi Vratam. Families buying for a haldi or mehndi often want several sets so every table matches — get in touch before ordering at that quantity and we will confirm stock against your date.

Frequently asked questions

Do they really nest?
Yes. The 9-inch sits inside the 11-inch, which sits inside the 14-inch. Put a cloth between them in storage so the finish does not rub.
Are they flat plates or bowls?
Plates with a shallow raised edge. They hold petals, paste and dry offerings, not a depth of liquid.
Can I fill it with water?
We would not. The base metal is iron under a gold polish, and standing water will eventually work under the finish and cause rust. Use it dry — petals, tealights, dry flowers — or float things in a separate glass or brass bowl set inside it. If it does get wet, dry it straight away.
Can I use them for haldi?
Yes, and it is the most common use. Turmeric stains, so wipe it off rather than leaving it to sit.
Is the pattern the same on all three?
Yes, the same etched mandala, scaled to each plate. They read as a set rather than three unrelated pieces.
Can I serve food on them?
Dry food is fine. Use a liner under anything oily, and do not cut on them.
Is the gold solid, or a finish?
A finish. These are iron with a gold polish over the top — not solid brass and not plating. That is what puts the price where it is. It will mark if you drag it across a hard surface or knock it, so lift rather than slide it and keep pieces apart in storage. If you want metal that cannot scratch off, our brass urlis are solid all the way through.
How do I clean it?
Wipe with a soft dry cloth. This is iron under a gold polish, so keep it dry — do not wash it, do not put it in the dishwasher, and do not leave it outdoors overnight. Wipe out any spilled wax or oil once it has cooled.
Can I order several for an event?
Yes — get in touch before you order if you need more than a few. We can usually help on price for larger quantities and confirm stock before you commit to a date.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every order is insured. Photograph the box and the piece and contact us, and we will sort out a replacement or a refund.
