A brass wall hanging, 15 inches long, built from four engraved swastik plaques with small bells strung between them. The swastik is one of the oldest auspicious marks in Indian practice, drawn at thresholds and on account books at Diwali, and it is hung at an entrance for the same reason.

Product details

  • Height 15 in · width 4 in
  • Weight 700 g (approx. 25 oz / 1.5 lb)
  • Material: brass
  • Finish: gold tone with fine engraved detailing
  • Four swastik plaques with tiered bells
  • Handcrafted in India

Why this one

  • It sounds as well as hangs. The bells ring when a door opens near it, which is the traditional function - sound at a threshold, not just a symbol on a wall.
  • 700 g of brass in a piece 15 inches long, so the strand hangs straight rather than curling.
  • Four engraved plaques rather than one, which gives the hanging a vertical rhythm and lets it read from a distance.

Where it works

Beside or above a main door, which is the customary placement. Also used in a pooja room, on a balcony door, or in an office entrance. It needs a wall rather than a shelf.

Gifting

A griha pravesh gift more than anything else - the swastik goes up when the house is first entered. Also given at Diwali and at the opening of a new business.

Frequently asked questions

How do I hang it?
From a single point at the top. At 700 g a small nail or a picture hook will take it; a push pin is not enough for this weight.
Do the bells actually ring?
Yes. They are small, so it is a light sound rather than a temple bell - enough to notice when someone comes through the door.
What does the swastik mean here?
In Indian usage it is an ancient mark of auspiciousness and wellbeing, drawn at doorways, on wedding invitations and on ledgers at Diwali. It long predates and is unrelated to its twentieth-century European misuse.
Will the finish change over time?
Brass darkens naturally. Polish it back with a standard brass cleaner if you prefer it bright, or leave it to deepen - both are normal and neither harms the piece.
How do I clean it?
Dust with a dry cloth, working into the engraving with a soft brush. Avoid water and never put it in a dishwasher. Use brass polish sparingly and buff dry.
Can it go outdoors?
It is made for indoor use. Brass weathers and spots outdoors, so keep it sheltered if you put it on a covered porch or patio.
Is it noisy in a draught?
It can chime a little near an open window. If that bothers you, hang it on the hinge side of the door rather than the opening side.
What if it arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph the damage, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace it or make it right.
Can I return it?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer, so please check the dimensions against your space first.
