Two brass hanging oil lamps, one topped with the Shankh and one with the Chakra - the conch and the discus, two of the four emblems Vishnu holds. Each hangs from a 14-inch chain and holds oil and a wick, so they light a pooja room from above rather than from a shelf.

Product details

  • Set of 2 hanging oil lamps, Shankh and Chakra
  • 6 in high · 3.5 in wide, each
  • Chain length 14 in
  • Weight 1,370 g for the set (approx. 48 oz / 3 lb)
  • Material: brass with a golden polish
  • Handcrafted in India

Why this one

  • They hang. Almost every brass diya sits on a surface. These free up the shelf and put the light at eye level, which is how temple lamps are hung.
  • A matched pair of emblems, not two of the same. Shankh and Chakra are meant to flank - one on each side of the deity.
  • 1,370 g for the set - about 3 lb - so they hang straight and steady instead of spinning on the chain.

Where it works

A pooja room or home mandir, hung either side of the deity. Also used in an entryway, on a balcony under cover, or flanking a doorway during Diwali and Karthigai Deepam.

Gifting

A housewarming or wedding gift for someone who already has table lamps and has run out of surface. The pair format makes it complete as it comes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I hang them?
From the chain at the top, on a ceiling hook or a wall bracket. At roughly 685 g each they need a proper hook rather than an adhesive one.
What oil and wick do they take?
Sesame or coconut oil with a cotton wick, or ghee. Fill the bowl to about two-thirds so it does not slop when the lamp swings.
What do the Shankh and Chakra stand for?
The conch and the discus, two of the four attributes Vishnu carries. The Shankh is associated with purity and the sound that opens a ritual; the Chakra with order and righteousness.
Do they swing?
They settle quickly once hung. Keep them clear of a door that slams or a vent blowing directly on them, particularly when lit.
Is it solid brass?
Yes. At 1,370 g for the pair the weight confirms it - a plated or hollow piece of these dimensions would weigh a fraction as much.
How do I clean it?
Wipe out the cooled oil with a paper towel, then dust with a dry cloth. Pitambari powder, Brasso or lemon and salt all bring the shine back. Dry it thoroughly afterwards.
Will the finish change over time?
Brass darkens naturally. Polish it back with a standard brass cleaner if you prefer it bright, or leave it to deepen - both are normal and neither harms the piece.
What if it arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph the damage, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace it or make it right.
Can I return it?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer, so please check the dimensions against your space first.
