A shingardani, sometimes called a chopra, is the fitted brass box royal women kept sindoor, kajal and bindis in. This one has nine compartments arranged around a centre, each with its own peacock on the lid, and the whole thing locks shut by screwing down the peacock finial in the middle.
Product details
- Height 6 in · width 6 in closed, 10 in open
- Weight 1,900 g (approx. 67 oz / 4.2 lb)
- Nine compartments, each with peacock detailing
- Locks by unscrewing the central peacock finial
- Material: brass
- Finish: antique gold, hand-engraved
- Handcrafted in India
Why this one
- The central finial locks all nine at once. Unscrew the peacock and every compartment opens; screw it down and they are held closed. That mechanism is the piece.
- Nine separate peacocks, one on each compartment lid, plus the larger one on top. Every one is engraved by hand.
- 1,900 g of brass - about 4.2 lb - and it opens from 6 inches closed to 10 inches across, so it has presence both shut and open.
Where it works
A pooja mandir for kumkum, haldi and akshata. A dressing table for jewellery and bindis. A dining table as a spice or condiment box. It also works as a standalone display piece closed, which is how most people keep it between uses.
Gifting
A wedding gift above all - the shingardani is part of the traditional trousseau. Also given at housewarmings and Diwali, and collected by anyone who keeps antique-style Indian brass.
