A dhoop dani is the covered brass burner used for loban, sambrani and dhoop during pooja - the smoke is carried through the house afterwards to clear the air. This one has a pierced peacock lid so the smoke escapes evenly, standing on a three-legged tortoise base that keeps the hot body clear of the surface.

Product details

  • Kurma: 5 in high · 5.5 in diameter · 1,000 g
  • Pushpa: 7 in high · 5.5 in diameter · 1,200 g
  • Material: brass
  • Finish: hand-engraved peacock lid on a three-legged tortoise base
  • Handcrafted in India

Why this one

  • The tortoise base is not decoration. Three cast legs lift the body off the table, so a burner full of hot charcoal does not mark a wood surface.
  • Heavy brass, 1,000 to 1,200 g. Brass holds heat, which keeps sambrani smouldering steadily rather than flaring and dying.
  • The peacock lid lifts off by the finial, which stays cool enough to handle for longer than the body does.

Which one do I need

Two sizes, same construction:

  • Kurma - 5 in high, 5.5 in across, 1,000 g. The everyday size for a mandir shelf.
  • Pushpa - 7 in high, 5.5 in across, 1,200 g. Same footprint, taller profile, so it reads as a display piece as well as a burner.

Where it works

A pooja room or home mandir. Also carried room to room after aarti, which is the traditional use, and used in living rooms for sambrani in place of a candle.

Gifting

A Diwali and housewarming gift, and a common return gift. It suits people who use incense already and have been making do with a stick holder.

Frequently asked questions

What can I burn in it?
Loban, sambrani, dhoop cones, agarbatti or bakhoor. Charcoal discs work too, which is how resin incense is usually burned.
Does the outside get hot?
Yes. Brass conducts heat and the body will be hot while it is burning. The tortoise legs keep it off the surface and the finial on the lid stays cooler, but use a mat and let it cool before you move it.
Which size should I buy?
Kurma at 5 inches for a mandir shelf or daily use. Pushpa at 7 inches if you want the taller silhouette on display - the base footprint is the same either way.
How do I clean out the ash?
Let it cool completely, tip out the ash, then wipe the inside with a dry cloth. Do not wash the inside - residue and water together will stain the brass.
Will the finish change over time?
Brass darkens naturally. Polish it back with a standard brass cleaner if you prefer it bright, or leave it to deepen - both are normal and neither harms the piece.
Can I use it outdoors?
For an evening on a covered patio, yes. Bring it in afterwards; brass spots outdoors.
What if it arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph the damage, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace it or make it right.
Can I return it?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer, so please check the dimensions against your space first.
