What a charpai is

The charpai is the woven daybed found on every Indian verandah - a wooden frame with rope strung across it in a tight diagonal weave, no cushion and no upholstery. These are the same construction shrunk to stool and bench height, made by the same weavers.

Why this one

Six kilos - just over 13 lb - of mango wood and cotton rope, and no upholstery to flatten or stain. The rope is strung by hand across the frame in a diagonal weave, which is what gives a charpai its slight give: it is firmer than a cushion and softer than a wooden seat. Nothing on it needs replacing as it ages - a rope seat loosens over years rather than sagging in months, and it can be restrung.

Which colourway

Nine colourways, in two families. Three are two-tone diamond weaves - Brown, Black and Orange, each worked against undyed cream rope, and each quiet enough to sit in a neutral room. Six are multicolour quadrant weaves - Multicolor, Multicolor Yellow, Multicolor Red, Multicolor Pink, Rainbow and Green - where the seat is divided into four blocks of colour in a chevron. Look at the photographs before choosing: the colour names describe the dominant thread rather than the whole seat.

Where it goes

At a dressing table or vanity, which is what most of these are bought for. At the foot of a bed, where it holds a folded throw as often as a person. In an entryway as the place you sit to put shoes on. In a living room as the spare seat that does not look like a spare seat. On a covered porch or a screened patio - the rope handles humidity, but it should not be rained on.

The rest of the family

There is a jute version of the same idea, and a matching 48 inch bench, on the charpai bench and stool page. If you want a small table rather than a seat, the carved elephant stools are the same height with a solid wooden top.

Gifting

It is a housewarming gift that does not need to match anything the recipient already owns, and it ships in a single box. The only setup is screwing on four legs by hand. If you are sending it directly, tell us at checkout and we will leave the invoice out of the box.

Frequently asked questions

Can an adult sit on it?
Yes - it is built as a seat, not as a decorative stool, and it is used as one in the photographs. We do not publish a load rating, so we will not quote you a weight limit. What we can tell you is the construction: a solid mango wood frame with the rope strung across it under tension, which is the same way a full-size charpai is built.
Does it need assembly?
Only the legs, and no tools are needed. They screw into the frame by hand. The order matters, so it is worth doing this way:
How firm is the rope seat?
Firmer than a cushioned stool, softer than a plain wooden one. The diagonal weave has a little give when you sit down and springs back. There is no padding, so it is comfortable for a while rather than for an evening.
Will the rope stretch or sag?
It settles slightly in the first weeks and then holds. A rope seat loosens over years of daily use rather than months, and unlike a cushion it can be tightened or restrung rather than replaced.
Will mine match the photograph exactly?
Close, not identical. The rope is strung by hand, so the diamond count and the exact placement of the colour blocks vary a little from stool to stool.
Can it go outdoors?
On a covered porch, a balcony or a screened patio, yes. Not in the open - cotton rope holds water and mango wood moves if it is repeatedly soaked and dried.
How do I clean it?
Vacuum the weave with a brush attachment. For a mark, use a barely damp cloth and let it dry fully before sitting on it. Do not soak the rope.
What if it arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph the damage, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace it or make it right.
Can I return it?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer, so check the 18 inch footprint against your space first.
Can I order several?
Yes - they are ordered in pairs and in sets for events and hospitality. Email contact@urliutsav.com with your quantity and date and we will quote you.

Screw all four legs in loosely first, without tightening any of them. Stand the stool on a flat floor and turn each leg in or out until all four make contact and it sits steady with no rock. Then tighten each leg firmly, one at a time. A small gap where a leg meets the frame is normal - leave it as long as the stool is stable. After two or three days of use, give each leg a final turn: the joints settle under weight, and that last tighten is what holds.

Tightening one leg fully before levelling is what causes a wobble that keeps coming back.

Shipping and assurance

Free insured shipping across the USA and Canada. Ships from San Ramon, California, usually within one business day. The stool travels in a single fragile-marked box with corner protection, with the four legs packed alongside the frame. If it arrives damaged, send us a photo and we will resolve it - transit damage is covered.
