A pooja thali is the tray a household keeps its ritual pieces on, so that everything needed for aarti comes out together. This is a five-piece set on a swastik-engraved tray with elephant heads for feet and a fringe of small bells hanging from the rim, in brass finished to antique silver.

How many pieces are there?

What is the symbol in the centre?
The svastika, an ancient mark of auspiciousness used in Hindu, Jain and Buddhist practice for several thousand years. It is drawn at thresholds and on ledgers across India and is unrelated to the twentieth-century European emblem that borrowed and tilted the form. Here it sits in the centre medallion inside the floral border.
Do the bells on the rim actually ring?
They chime softly when the tray is lifted or moved. They are decorative drops rather than a bell you would ring deliberately — the 5-inch handled bell in the set is for that.
Is it solid silver?
No, and that is deliberate. Solid silver at this size would cost many times more and would need polishing after every use. This is brass with the same look and none of the upkeep.
Is this German silver?
Not literally, and we would rather say so plainly. German silver — also sold as nickel silver — is a copper, nickel and zinc alloy that contains no silver in it at all. This piece is brass, nickel-plated and then oxidised so the darkening settles into the recesses of the engraving. A lot of this category gets sold as German silver regardless of what is actually underneath, so it is worth knowing which you are buying.
Can I use it for Raksha Bandhan?
Yes, that is what most buyers use it for. The thali holds the rakhi, roli, rice and sweets, the kalash takes water, and the two containers hold kumkum and haldi.
Is it food safe?
Treat it as a ritual set. Dry prasad and sweets on the thali are fine; we would not serve a meal from it.
How do I clean it?
Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Do not put it in the dishwasher and do not use abrasive scourers or acidic cleaners — they will cut through the plating. Between uses, store it in a sealed plastic bag; that slows tarnishing more than anything else you can do.
Will it tarnish?
Silver plating darkens over time, and the antique finish is designed to sit in the recesses and deepen the pattern as it does. That is the intended look. If you want it brighter, a light buff with a dry cloth on the raised areas will lift it.
