A footed bowl for fruit, in antique silver over brass, made in two shapes that do quite different jobs. The short one is a wide scalloped dish that sits low on a counter; the tall one is a pedestal bowl with ring handles that lifts the fruit to eye level. Both hold a full weekly shop of fruit and look like something when they are empty.

Product details

  • Short: 3 inches high, 9 inches top diameter, 580 g (approx. 1.3 lb)
  • Tall: 6.5 inches high, 9.5 inches top diameter, 730 g (approx. 1.6 lb)
  • Material: brass, nickel-plated and oxidised to an antique silver finish
  • Decoration: floral repoussé; scalloped rim on the short, ring handles on the tall
  • Handmade in India
  • Not dishwasher safe

Why this one

  • It works empty. Most fruit bowls look bare between shops. The repoussé floral work on these carries the piece on its own.
  • Two genuinely different shapes, not two sizes of the same thing — see below.
  • Brass underneath, nickel-plated and oxidised, so it will not dent the way a thin spun bowl does when it is loaded with fruit.
  • Everyday and festive. It holds apples on a Tuesday and floating diyas at Diwali without looking out of place either way.

Short or tall

  • Short — 3 inches tall, 9 inches across the top, 580 g. A wide scalloped bowl with a floral rim on short feet. Sits under a wall cabinet, and you look down into it. $80.
  • Tall — 6.5 inches tall, 9.5 inches across the top, 730 g. A pedestal bowl with a ring handle each side. Reads as a centrepiece and lifts the fruit off the counter. $110.

If it is going on a kitchen counter under cabinets, take the short one. If it is going on a dining table or an island, take the tall one.

Where it works

  • A kitchen counter or island as the everyday fruit bowl
  • A dining table, holding fruit or floating flower heads
  • A wedding or reception table as a filled centrepiece
  • An entryway console, empty
  • A Golu or Navratri display, holding offerings

Gifting

A fruit bowl is one of the few decorative pieces that gets used every day, which makes it a strong housewarming or griha pravesh gift — it will not go in a cupboard. It also suits a wedding and an anniversary. Plain packaging, no price on it. Buying several for an event, get in touch before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between short and tall?
Shape, not just height. The short is a wide scalloped dish on small feet; the tall is a pedestal bowl with ring handles. Measure your cabinet clearance before choosing the tall one.
Can I put fruit straight in it?
Yes, fruit in skins. Wipe it out if anything leaks, and do not leave cut fruit sitting on the finish.
How much fruit does it hold?
A dozen apples or a mixed bowl of citrus and pomegranates in either shape. The tall one looks fuller with less in it.
Is this German silver?
Not literally, and we would rather say so plainly. German silver — also sold as nickel silver — is a copper, nickel and zinc alloy that contains no silver in it at all. This piece is brass, nickel-plated and then oxidised so the darkening settles into the recesses of the engraving. A lot of this category gets sold as German silver regardless of what is actually underneath, so it is worth knowing which you are buying.
Can I use it for water and flowers?
Yes. Empty and dry it the same evening rather than leaving water standing in it.
Do the two shapes come as a pair?
No, they are separate variants. Several customers buy both and group them at different heights.
How do I clean it?
Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Do not put it in the dishwasher and do not use abrasive scourers or acidic cleaners — they will cut through the plating. Between uses, store it in a sealed plastic bag; that slows tarnishing more than anything else you can do.
Will it tarnish?
Silver plating darkens over time, and the antique finish is designed to sit in the recesses and deepen the pattern as it does. That is the intended look. If you want it brighter, a light buff with a dry cloth on the raised areas will lift it.
Can I order several for an event?
Yes — get in touch before you order if you need more than a few. We can usually help on price for larger quantities and confirm stock before you commit to a date.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every order is insured. Photograph the box and the piece and contact us, and we will sort out a replacement or a refund.
