Ganesha worked in white clay relief across a 23 by 23 inch panel - trunk, crown, the raised hand of blessing - with mirrors set into the modelling. Almost all Lippan is polychrome; this one is not. Taking the colour out leaves the relief and the mirrors to do everything, which is why it reads as sculpture rather than as a painting.

What Lippan art is

Lippan kaam is the mud-and-mirror relief work of Kutch in Gujarat, made for centuries by Rabari women on the inside walls of their homes: clay worked into raised patterns with the fingers, then set with abhla - small mirrors - so a single oil lamp lights the whole room. What you are buying is that technique on a board, hand-worked in India.

Why this one

3,100 g - nearly seven pounds - and just under two feet square. It is the largest and by some distance the heaviest Lippan piece we make, and the only one in white. The weight is clay: there is a great deal more relief on this panel than on the round ones, which is what lets a monochrome piece hold a wall. Under a downlight the shadows in the modelling do the work that colour does elsewhere.

Where it goes

Above a mandir, on the wall facing a front door, over a fireplace, or at the head of a stairwell. It suits a coloured or textured wall better than a white one - against white the relief flattens out and you lose the shadow that makes it work. Charcoal, deep green, teal and warm grey all give it something to stand against.

Hanging it

A hook is fitted to the back. At 3,100 g this is not a pushpin piece - use a nail into a stud or a drywall anchor rated for the weight. Screws and anchors are not supplied.

The other Lippan pieces

The round panels are lighter and smaller: 18-inch deity designs in seven subjects, and the 16-inch dot mandala in five colours. A pair of the smaller rounds either side of this panel is the arrangement people ask for most.

Care

Dust with a dry, soft cloth or a soft brush - the raised relief holds dust in the grooves. Do not use water or spray cleaner on the clay work. If you want the mirrors bright, wipe them individually with a barely damp corner of the cloth.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it white when Lippan is usually coloured?
Traditional Lippan is clay and mirror, and the colour came later. Leaving it white returns it to the relief and the abhla, and gives you a piece that works in a room where a polychrome panel would be too much.
How heavy is it?
3,100 g, about 6.8 lb. Heavy enough to need a proper fixing - see above.
Are the mirrors real glass?
Yes. Each abhla is a small cut glass mirror set into the clay by hand while it is still workable. They are not printed, and they are not plastic.
Is the relief deep?
Deeper than on the round panels. That is where most of the extra weight is, and it is why the piece casts shadow.
Will mine look exactly like the photograph?
Close, not identical. The relief is pressed out by hand and every mirror is placed individually, so the spacing and the line weight differ slightly from piece to piece.
Can the clay work chip?
It can if the panel is knocked hard against something, in the same way plasterwork can. In normal use on a wall it does not. Panels ship flat with corner protection.
Is it suitable above a mandir?
It is the most common use. It is a decorative panel rather than a consecrated murti - treat it as you would a framed deity image.
Can it go outdoors or in a bathroom?
No. It is clay relief on an MDF board. Damp softens the clay and swells the board.
What if it arrives damaged?
