Emerald Yosemite Jharokha Wall Art – Signed Original, 20x16

A painting, not a print. Sakshi Khullar paints the jharokha — the overhanging window of a Rajasthani palace — onto canvas, then sets hundreds of small mirror tiles by hand into the painted lattice around it. Up close you can see the canvas weave under the paint and the individual mirror squares seated in their gold grid. It is signed on the reverse under her studio label.

What you are looking at

The architecture is entirely painted: the scalloped arch and its stepped green bands, the small niche set into the crown, and at the centre a pair of ochre doors with brass ring pulls and lotus panels. Around all of it runs a diamond lattice of real mirror tesserae — the Thikri and Lippan tradition of mirror inlay — laid into a hand-ruled gold grid. Some tiles are clear, some smoked grey, a few tinted red. They were placed one at a time, and the grid is unforgiving: a single tile set crooked shows across the whole panel.

Held under a lamp the mirrors catch in sequence as you move past it. That is the effect the technique exists for, and it is the one thing a photograph cannot give you.

Why Yosemite

This is one of five in the artist’s series, each panel named for an American landscape and painted in its colours — Yosemite, Bryce Canyon, Blue Ridge, Yellowstone, and the White House. Emerald Yosemite takes the deep conifer greens of the valley floor. It is a Rajasthani form carrying an American place, which is a fair description of a lot of the households it hangs in.

Where it goes

Somewhere it gets light. A hallway with a picture light, a wall beside a lamp, an entryway that catches afternoon sun — the inlay needs a moving light source to do its work, and in a flat-lit corner you lose half the piece. It hangs alone; this is not a gallery-wall object.

Hanging it

A sawtooth bracket is fitted to the back. At 1.34 kg a single screw into a drywall anchor is enough. Hang it at eye level — the mirror tiles read best straight on. Screws and wall anchors are not supplied.

Care

Dust with a dry, soft brush. Never spray liquid onto it: the mirror tiles are seated in the painted surface and cleaner will creep under their edges.

Frequently asked questions

Is it signed?
Yes — on the reverse, in ink, beneath the artist’s printed studio label. You can see it in the photographs.

Are the doors real?
No. On this panel the doors are painted, down to the ring pulls and the shadow under the arch. Three others in the series — White House, Thunderstorm Blue Ridge and Yellowstone Mist — have doors that genuinely open over a mirror.

Are those real mirrors?
Yes. Small squares of real mirror glass, set individually into the painted lattice by hand.

Will I get exactly the one in the photograph?
Each panel is painted and inlaid individually, so yours will differ in small ways from the one photographed. Stock is very limited on this series.
