A corbel is the carved bracket that sits under a beam or a balcony in South Indian temple architecture - structural once, ornamental now. These are 12 inches tall, cut from mango wood, hand-painted, and finished with a small brass bell hanging from the underside. Mount one either side of a doorway, or use a pair to carry a floating shelf.

Product details

  • 12 inches high x 6 inches wide x 3 inches deep
  • Peacock: 1,425 g (approx. 3.1 lb). Elephant: 1,280 g (approx. 2.8 lb)
  • Mango wood with a hanging brass bell
  • Hand-carved and hand-painted in India
  • Heavy-duty hook fitted to the back
  • Sold singly - order two for a pair

Sold as single pieces

The price is for one corbel. Most people want two - one either side of a door, or a matched pair under a shelf - so set the quantity to 2 at checkout if that is what you are after.

Which design

  • Peacock - a peacock in profile against the backing plate, tail sweeping down the bracket. 1,425 g (approx. 3.1 lb)
  • Elephant - a caparisoned elephant standing clear of the backing plate on a stepped ledge. 1,280 g (approx. 2.8 lb)

The elephant is the more three-dimensional of the two and casts the better shadow; the peacock is the flatter relief and sits closer to the wall. Both carry the brass bell.

Where it goes

Above a doorway, either side of an entry door, on a fireplace mantel, in the corner where two walls meet, or as a pair supporting a floating shelf. In a pooja room they work flanking the mandir. The brass bell means they carry sound as well as shape - worth knowing if you are hanging one somewhere a door draught reaches it.

Hanging it

A heavy-duty hook is already fitted to the back. At around 1.3 to 1.4 kg use a stud or a rated drywall anchor. For a pair, measure the gap twice - corbels that are not level with each other are the first thing the eye catches. Screws and anchors are not supplied.

Care

Wipe occasionally with a dry or barely damp cloth. Avoid solvents and household chemicals, which lift the paint. The brass bell will darken over time; a brass cleaner brings it back.

Frequently asked questions

Is this one corbel or two?
One. The photographs show pairs because that is how most people hang them, but the price and the listing are for a single piece. Set quantity to 2 for a pair.
Can it actually hold a shelf?
It is a decorative bracket, carved from mango wood, and a pair will support a light display shelf holding ornaments. Do not use them for books or anything structural.
Does the brass bell ring?
Yes, it has a clapper. If you would rather it stayed quiet, a small piece of felt inside silences it without changing the look.
How far does it project from the wall?
Three inches.
Are the two designs the same size?
Same 12 x 6 x 3 inches. The peacock is slightly heavier at 1,425 g against the elephant's 1,280 g.
Is the wood solid?
Yes - mango wood, hand-carved. The weight is the check: nothing hollow or resin-cast comes in at 1.3 kg for this size.
What if it arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Photograph the damage, email contact@urliutsav.com, and we will replace it or make it right.
Can I return it?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer, so check the dimensions against your wall first.
Can I order several?
For hospitality, restaurants, stores or corporate gifting, email contact@urliutsav.com and we will quote you for a bulk order.
