The horse is Rajasthan's folk animal - the mount of Ramdevji, the state's most widely worshipped folk deity, and a votive offering left at his shrines in clay and wood. This is the smaller of our two, ten inches long, carved from mango wood and painted with a floral saddle blanket over a single strong ground colour.

Why this one
470 g - about a pound - which is what makes this the one people buy in pairs. It is small enough to sit on a bookshelf between books, on a windowsill, or on a desk, and light enough to move around while you decide where it belongs. The saddle blanket carries the painting: a floral panel over the flank, a bridle along the head, fine line work down the legs, all laid on freehand.
