Four hand-painted 10-inch discs, each holding one image against a flat field of colour: Krishna's hands on the flute against a night sky, a peacock on a flowering branch, and two Pichwai cows. The plates are MDF, varnished, and light enough to hang on a pushpin - the format Indian homes have used for wall art long before anyone called it a gallery wall.

Why these work on a wall

460 g each - about a pound. That is the number that makes a gallery wall of these practical: a single small nail or a rated pushpin holds one, so you can hang five or six without touching a stud, and move them when the arrangement is wrong. The varnish coat is what keeps the paint from scuffing when you take them down and put them back up.

Where they go

Stair walls, entryway walls, above a console or a sideboard, in a kitchen nook, or filling the awkward vertical strip beside a doorway that nothing else fits. A single plate reads as an accent; three or more read as a collection. They also sit well interleaved with a wooden cow or elephant head from the same range.

Care

Wipe with a soft cloth. Glass cleaner applied to the cloth rather than sprayed will lift finger marks off the varnish. Do not soak them and do not put them in a dishwasher - they are painted MDF, not ceramic.

Frequently asked questions

Why are Krishna's hands shown without his face?

The flute and the hands are a standard shorthand for Krishna in Indian devotional art - the instrument identifies him without a portrait. It is also why the design works in a room where a full deity image would feel too explicit.

What does the peacock stand for?

The peacock feather is Krishna's own emblem, worn in his crown. The bird carries that association even when he is not in the picture.

Can I eat off it?

No. These are decorative wall plates - hand-painted, varnished MDF, not glazed ceramic and not food safe. They are made to hang, not to serve.

Is it real wood?

MDF board, which is engineered wood. It is what makes a 10-inch plate come in at 460 g and stay perfectly flat instead of warping the way a thin solid-wood disc would.

Can I mix designs from your other plate listings?

Yes, and most people do. All four plate listings are the same 10-inch size, the same thickness and the same price, so they hang together as one set regardless of which listing they came from.

Will mine look exactly like the photograph?

Close, not identical. Each plate is painted by hand, so line weight and colour depth shift a little between pieces. That variation is the reason to buy a hand-painted plate rather than a printed one.

Is the price for one plate or a set?

Can they go in a kitchen or a bathroom?

A dry kitchen wall away from the hob is fine. Bathrooms are not - steam gets into MDF and lifts the varnish.
